Chickens In Ya Window

So funny.  I spent many summers up at our families cabin in the San Bernardino mountains raking pine needles in prep for fire season.  As an adult, we cleared around our cabin in Idyllwild for fire season, too.  Never, ever heard anyone call it "pine straw". (Mix of Ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, Sugar pine, Coulter pine & Lodgepole pine needles.)

Its DH's birthday today.  Had a nice relaxing day since it's been raining - a lot - for a change.  Usually we'll get thunderstorms that blow in, dump rain, then blow out, but it's been raining pretty steadily since last night.    We need it, so I'm definitely not complaining! Had a small lake for a while in front of the coop and in part of the run.  Will have to figure out how to divert water away from there in the future.

Getting ready for vacation.  Leaving Friday to go to Carlsbad caverns, then down to Fredriksburg in the hill country of Texas, then San Antonio to see the Riverwalk and the Alamo, then up to Lubbock to see relatives, then home.  Lots of driving through areas we haven't really been before. (Texas).  Should be fun!  Will have the neighbor check on the chickens about halfway through to replenish the food if needed, and collect any eggs that might be in the nest box - but there won't be many, I'm sure.  Had my first day in a long time with no eggs laid today!

So enough of my rambling - hope you all are having a good night!

I'm jealous... would love to go to Carlsbad... been to Mammoth Cave in KY though, that was awesome... happy belated, DH!!
Enjoy your trip and have fun!! :)

Thanks WV!!! I kno im not Fightin nobody!

Rayvn i drempt about Your calls! I kno, i kno! Im nuts... Almost never remember my dreams either! I only want to take part in the hatching challenge of it for the experience... In my dream i guess i was in your coop, they were nested down all over the place and had to be what i remmeber seeing in your pics because ive never seen ducks like those!
u

No hes not, But i think he portrays the character better than any other actor i can think of, and thats a huge character challenge!

I like your style :cool ! I love books that make me ponder ulterior motives. I look on my shelf because i could swear i have a Rapp book, i have two or three police type right up your alley but all i can find roght now is Clancy.

:D fun stuff! Glad i check in! Off runnin again, but ill be back later!

lmao... now I want to know what your dream ducks looked like!! :gig

This took me more then a good minute to figure out what the heck you were talking about!!! :lau Now I know how my kids feel!! Keeping the hope alive that we'll all live under one roof again......someday. :gig
Ok, thank you. Great info! I will get that dropper bottle you are talking about. I did my homework on which was the best one and the valbazen seemed to get the most points, so I ordered a small bottle from a vet online. Now, I just have to figure out the dosages.
You better be saving those for incubation!! Are you???
That is super cool! I was going to ask if those were pine needles but I guess they are. Never even thought about making hay/straw out of them!
:gig that is so funny!
Yup!! Lol!! Found someone "local" (2 hours) with mag-pie and I forget the other color. We were chatting because he was trying to sell me two pairs of mandarins. I asked if he would sell the call duck eggs in spring and he said they are his wife's but "maybe if she has extra"....didn't really sound promising at all. But what do you think about the mag-pie? He sent pics from a show they won.
With 3 boys (one being a baby), I will have to wait at least 5 years before I get the chance to read a good book again! No joke! My goal is to read storeys duck guide this winter! That means I'll have to sacrifice my byc time, tough! :hit

I think Valbazen is .5cc/.5ml for a 6lb chicken, dose once and then again in 10 days... I'll grab the link to the thread Kathy (casportpony) made... she is genius for figuring dosages...

You gonna send me those pics then?? :D ;)
Would like magpies, but I won't go crazy chasing them, lol...

I just checked what that guy wrote, he has 6 magpie and 3 chocolate pied. I don't think I've ever heard of chocolate pied. Don't really think I want to try either of those colors though. I still have to do my homework on colors. His wife has gorgeous Sabastapol geese, if anyone is interested in those. I don't have the space or any water but those geese are so beautiful!

Chocolate Pied?? Now that I could use... hmmmm...
Start sweet talking his wife, Ruby... :gig

You just can't get SQ prices around here. Maybe if you wanted to sit on them for a while, but when I'm ready to sell, I'm ready to sell. Pullets of almost any breed will bring $12-15 each, but that's about it. You can't hardly give roosters away. POL hens will go around $25, but I never keep them that long. I will probably ask $20 for Am pullets, but I'm hoping to sell the chicks straight run because it takes me so long to sex them. I have 3 people waiting for me to start hatching right now, so maybe the chicks will sell quickly

Not saying they should be SQ prices, but do not undervalue your birds... if you do, you'll always be stuck in the lower end...

After a while, you can tell the good local ads from the bad ones. I try to take up close pics to show as accurately as I can what the birds really look like. You see chickens here for $2, too, but there is either no pic, or the picture is a group shot taken through a fence. Usually the trailer and El Camino are visible in the background :gig

I think $15 is cheap for some of my birds, but I also don't haggle that price. If someone wants 6 or more birds, I will drop to $12, but I won't go below $15 for less than that. I'm not competing in price with the guy down the street with the barnyard mixes. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the mixes, but my birds are worth more. This was my first year hatching and selling, and I have a calling list for next year, so hopefully I won't have to do CL forever

There ya go... pick a range and stick to it... might take a bit, but the quality will speak for itself and you'll get decent prices...

People will judge your stock on how you price them as well... too high and they'll never look twice, too low and they'll wonder what's wrong with them... get a medium average and don't drop the bottom out of your prices ever...

Bad ad: http://greenville.craigslist.org/grd/5257133685.html

Good ad: http://augusta.craigslist.org/grd/5268767396.html

Misleading ad. This one disappoints me, because he breeds beautiful birds, but they are Easter Eggers: http://greenville.craigslist.org/grd/5273052461.html

I've seen Pokey's quite a bit on ebay... they list pure Ohiki too... have always wondered if they really were or not... now I wonder more... :/

Pokey has beautiful birds, and some really spectacular pastel colors, I just wish he didn't advertise them as pure Ameraucana. He's only about 30 minutes from me

Not saying they aren't beautiful... just if that's his idea of Am's, it scares me to think of what is going on with his Ohiki... :/

My number is under the reply button. It's bad enough that the local rednecks can find it, but if the Yankees ever get ahold of it...
