Chickens In Ya Window

So I'm ready for bed now. I woke up this morning at 7am to a pip. All day that pip did nothing! I was really starting to worry that maybe the chick quit. I can't see inside because it's only a crack. As I'm hovered over the bator, panicking, the shell starts moving up and down and the egg starts rocking. It's like he said "I'm ok"! Now I'll have to get up all night to check so I don't miss zip!! No sleep for me tonight!
How old is she? I love that second picture!!

She's 4 months old going on 40, lol... it's hilarious to see her chewing out the big ducks and keeping everyone in line... tiny little terror...

This is my fave pic...

She's totally imprinted in you, huh? What's that like? I bet it's amazing! Is she laying eggs yet?

It's awesome, amazing and a pain in the @$$... she was a lone hatch, so she fully imprinted on me and did not want to recognize other ducks... she tried to eat the mallards and Crash & Burn when they hatched... and once she got her female voice, it was torture for my OH if I left her with him... she screamed her head off for 15 mins straight one night, he was deaf til morning, lol...
It was a lot of work getting her to realize she was a duck and wanted to be a duck, but it is totally worth it now... she takes care of her flock well, but still loves to come in for snuggle time...
She's not laying yet and probably won't until Feb/Mar time... Calls are seasonal layers, so not as many eggs as big ducks...

I read a lot about imprinting when I hatched and took care of the peachicks. And there are different levels of imprinting. Most of them observed with geese. But the higher level was not accepting other ducks, not mating with other ducks and then being aggressive toward their own kind to protect their humans. The lesser is imprinting on their sibling and humans. Then they know they are a duck but are friends with humans. Looks like she was the extreme! Imprinting is just so fascinating!

I have a zipper!!! Of course it's the second egg to pip and not the one approaching 24 hours.

Imprinting is very interesting information, and I feel essential to know about when working with/raising any animals... all animals will imprint at least superficially, and up to the extreme deep level of losing their own self... the key to successful imprint is to get it deep enough that you'll always be recognized as 'family' but at same time making sure they recognize and accept their own species... it was a lot of work, but in the end she made the choice and distinction of being a duck on her own... that was more rewarding than anything I've ever accomplished with any animal...

Yay for the zipper!!! C'mon, slowpoke!! :)

:frow

Had a really busy day - DH had a crash course in driving Model Ts - I chickened out because I don't want to commit driving in a crowd unless I know I have full control of the vehicle!

Huge Harvest Festival this weekend so we'll help shuttle Ts to the car show part, then back in the evening.  Should be fun!

Spent most of the day in the Garden prepping for winter & next season.  While I wan't paying attention, one of the little EEs committed suicide by Border Collie.  Now I only have 1 left, and if it is smart enough to stay in the run, it should do fine in the flock.

I have a super busy weekend and may not be on much, so have a great weekend everyone!

:hugs sorry for your loss....I would have been all up I. That model t!! Lol!!

:love too cute!
:sick
Sounds like fun. Sorry about the chick! :hugs

How did we all get sick at the same time? We're regulating via internet now? :gig. I'm not really sick...yet... 3-day migraine finally ended this afternoon, at least I hope its gone. Felt a little nauseous too, but not bad now. Hair of the dog, hair of the dog, :D

Hahahahahahaha!!! That's a good question??
Wow... now it sounds like I'm contagious via the web now... :/

Yikes!!! It started with you....I wonder who it will end with.

"A Bird in the Hand..." :D

Well I tossed and turned for another night but I feel like I slept more last night than the night before last. Come on and zip it!!!! Zip it real good!

Yay!!!! Now just the last one needs to come on!!!

So p*$$@^ at the moment. We hired a painting company to clean, caulk, trim paint and stain our house. It's the same company that did the trim paint 14 years ago, and it held up well so we brought them back.

Besides the mess, besides the noise, the total disregard of our landscaping and the mess is bad enough. But first thing this morning they dropped an extension ladder into an antique lightning rod, bent it all to hell, and shattered the glass ball.

Rant done. Now I can get on with my day. I just had to get it out of my system and no one is home but Baby and the dog and they just don't seem to care.

Oh that really sucks! Sorry about the lightning rod, it's horrible when antiques get broken.
