If it hasn't already been said, buy a hundred pack of blank cd's (they'll probably run you 3.99 these days) and string them up in your trees. Birds don't like them. It's not all there is too it but it's a super cheap preventative. A livestock guardian dog is about the best you can get, but I heard you gotta feed dogs EVERY DAY.

Throw away pie pans work pretty well also
