How do my chickens know it is morning when the chicken coop's inside is completely dark? I put tarps on top of the coop during the winter to keep the inside warm and it blocks out all the light. But they seem to know that it is morning when I go to let them out.

I think it has something to do with their internal clock telling them to wake up like sometimes when I have a day off on the weekday I will wake up when my alarm usually goes off because I am used to waking up around that time

If the coop is so heavily tarped that they aren't getting light, they may not be getting enough ventilation either. Chickens don't need to be kept warm in most circumstances. How cold is it?

This might tie into your other thread about the coop smelling.
They seem to be alright...
