Chickens legal in Chicago, why not everywhere

Just wanted to add, once you get to the site, you can click on the photo gallery and see beautiful full color chicken photos.

Good to hear more people are allowing chickens in their cities!!!

My apologies for posting this same article before I saw that you'd already done so.

I always thought roos were illegal in Chicago, but this article says not. I really want to find out the details, because if it's true it means we don't have to hide ours in the basement until we can rehome him!

OK, the article also says that there are places in town you can bring birds for slaughter and butchering. I *definitely* thought raising meat birds was illegal here. Now I am totally confused!

Kbunny, it is true about Chicago. I don't think nearby suburbs count. But if you are truly in Chicago, you can be one happy flock owner - hurray!! I'm surprised about Chicago since they have so many areas that stage fighting cocks as well as dog fights. If you note within the article, they say they have their own forum for Chicago chicken people, I believe 300 strong. Would be a very good idea to join that forum and while doing so tell them BYC welcomes them also. Plus BYC has much more exposure to chicken people - probably alot of them from Chicago on this site, hiding their chickens when they don't have to.

Any chicken can become a 'meat chicken'. Extra roosters, old hens who don't lay anymore, etc.

I had thought it was illegal to raise birds for slaughter in Chicago - until today I thought anything besides laying hens were illegal here. I guess either the law changed recently, or I had bad info.

it is common for big cities to allow chickens and even other animals like goats, sheep and pigs. I found this out when I worked on changing my ordinace in a suburb outside of chicago.. it turns out that a lot of big cities allow by exclusion. Meaning they just don't have an ordinace in place to say that you cant do it. 50 plus years ago it was very common for a lot of residences in bigger cities to have chickens etc...

during my research it was very clear to me that you cant raise in chicago for slaughter. very clear. maybe it changed but I highly doubt it. also I believe roosters are fine. they have no ordinace for that either as far as I can remember
