Chickens making REALLY weird noises... **UPDATE**

Mine are just now at the point of lay too, but from what I've experienced it has nothing to do with eggs... I've gone out there and looked when they were doing it and no eggs, and then I've gone out quite a bit later and still no eggs.... lol.

Either way it's just hilarious!

I was thinking this afternoon I needed to post here and find out what is wrong with my BO pullet!! She opens her beak real wide and "honk!!".... and she is nowhere near egg laying / puberty, as she is only about 10wks old. It cracks me up.

I have one ameraucana hen that does that. She mainly does it when she wants attention or if I put her down in the pen and leave. She stands at the gate and honks in this raspy voice real loud lol. She is the one who likes to sit on my lap with her head on my shoulder and be petted.

Hmm I guess I never thought that they might be doing it because they want me out there! I will have to go out next time...

Imagine 11 of them doing it all at once, it's quite a ruckus!

Mine is a hateful little BO (that I bought because I thought BOs were the friendliest birds lol ).... so maybe her honk is a warning or something?

My girls honked at point of lay, but now all "speak" normally. It seemed to coincide with their voices changing over from juvenile-sounding to adult-sounding. It was very funny though.

Honking is a warning noise. All of my birds do it when anything other then a human or a familiar dog "invades" their territory. I think its like the female version of the scream that the roosters make. Now that I don't have a rooster then hens are making that noise more often looking out for each other I think.

I guess that makes this hateful little thing the head hen? Great.... she is awful. She falls short of attacking..... stands at arm's length and honks. LOL
