Thank you for this amazing site. I've finally decided to join! This Main Street Mom became obsessed with backyard chickens after falling into a daydream on Pinterest. My daughter and I picked up 6 Ameracauna AKA Easter Eggers from Tractor Supply in the spring. My husband constructed a pretty fab coop for someone who had to learn about roofing and framing on short notice. The girls stayed cozy in our guestroom until the weather was warm enough for time in THE YARD. Finally we moved our feathered family to their coop. Crook Beak (named after her deformed beak..poor thing), Crabby, Fat Feather, Sally Sunshine, Speedy, and Henrietta (of course). Unfortunately, my young child tried to teach Crook to fly. She is no longer with us. Crabby, I'm sure had some sort of brain disorder. She commited suicide (would jump face first into the ground). We have 4 chickens left. Fat Feather is the biggest and boldest rooster..DANG! He will be managing a flock south of us soon. Henrietta started crowing yesterday..Double DANG! I will be contacting the local 4H tomorrow. Sally is looking like a Sal. I'm afraid out of 6 chickens, I now have ONE hen. I'm hoping to find homes for my 2 Roos as you guys call them. I'm not giving up. I've started hunting for "layers." I don't want Speedy to be lonely. My friends think I'm nuts but I don't care. I'm having too much fun.

from West Virginia! Oh don't worry, chicken math will quickly become an obsession; and we are NOT enablers....Not....

I went from having 1 Buff Orpington Roo and hen and 3 Production Red hens to those plus six Silkies, 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes (one roo and one hen), and 5 bantam chicks that we are still trying to figure out what they are. I know 2 are roos and 3 are hens. They all get along pretty well. I'm now checking the newspaper every day for a few more ladies for Nosy (Buff Orpington Roo). He needs a few more added to his harem!

Thank you for the welcome! Oh man.. We are having lots of fun! A friend of mine traded 2 hens, a red sex link and a leghorn, for our proud Fat Feather the rooster. Poor Fat Feather. He strutted his stuff in the new coop and was promptly put in his place by a bossy hen. I'm not worried, he was crowing (from the safety of a nesting box..haha) by the end of the day. I hope he teaches that old girl who's boss when he gets a little older.

Our 2 new hens whooped the 3 teens in our coop. Knocked those kids right off the roost! We had to install an emergency roost at a greater height for the bossy new arrivals. No one could settle in for the night with all the feathered butt kicking going on in the coop. Everyone finally settled. Three days later we have a happy flock. The girls (and 2 boys) are getting along....aaaand we got our first egg! Yay! Who knew one little brown egg would be so exciting. My daughter gave me a high-five. We stared at it for a couple of days, too afraid to eat it. Do you bronze a first egg? Haha.

We have found homes for the other boys...can't have crowing on Main St...darn. I'm not too sad. I'm going to have fun finding more hens.
