Chickens Pending

I have the chicken coops, feeders, water containers, etc. Need a run so my hounds won't have chicken for lunch. Will build it as soon as the weather warms up later this week and then come the chickens. Hope to have some by the end of the month.
Brand new to raising chickens so I plan to start small with 3-4 chickens. Want to be as natural as possible. Looking into Buff Orpingtons but open to other suggestions - RIR, EE....? Planning to get pullets that are close the laying age. Maybe later will start with chicks.
This a great site. I have already learned quite a bit and plan to read, read and read some more.

BTW, I am Trish. Just bought an acre & 1/4 of property. Garden, pool and trampoline also pending. Need to keep the almost teenaged son amused as well.

You can't go wrong with Orpingtons. Great layers, very docile, affectionate and quite hardy. Very fun birds to keep.

Hi Trish! We've started small also and currently have 3 chickens...an EE and 2 RIR. Next month we're getting 16 new little chicks. Sadly, my first flock met it's demise courtesy of one of my dogs. I now have a flock of six 12 week old Jersey Giants. They were not handled and socialized to people so they were scared when I first got them but after 3 weeks they have calmed down quite a bit. Working on a dog PROOF run, if such a thing exists. I want to add a few older hens that are either already laying or very close to it. So far this has been a fun adventure. I love watching one the girls as she jumps from the top of the waterer to the top of the feeder.
