Chickens purring????

I went up today to check on the ladies, and they were all laying under the coop. At least 3 of them started purring, 1 is my Americauna. (the others, not sure)

I've never heard this sound out of them, so I'm curious, do your chickens purr?

i've heard mine purr, generally when they are dirt-bathing in a big pile and sometimes at night when they go to bed. It's a cool sound.

No, But they make a growlling sound.

I've only had mine a few weeks but noticed 2 times they seem to purr/growl. They seemed to be scared at the time (storm coming in with thunder) and they stayed perfectly still while doing it.

It was really very funny.

After my girls go up on their roosts, and I close their door for the night, I stand outside their windows for awhile just so I can listen to them purr. I LOVE this sound! It's a complete contentment sound.

I think it means--okay, time to settle down, lets go to sleep. There is a high pitched trill they make which for mine, means "hawk".

I have a young light Brahma, Domino, who will jump in my lap, settle down, and purr. It is so gratifying!

I noticed my newly laying EE doing this today, as she was fixing up her nest to get it ready for laying. She squats down, tosses pine shavings over her left side then her right, and she was purring in between tosses. Soooo sweet.

I have heard the sound before from other pullets we have too.
