Chickens really peck people's eyes out!

I have an uncle (my aunt's husband) who is blind in one eye because a chicken pecked his eye when he was a baby. It's rather disturbing to look at his eye because the pupil isn't round. It's not any certain shape...maybe kinda boomerang shaped. I don't know the entire story, just what they told me when I was younger. I haven't seen him in years...

Yes they do this it happened to me lucky it was in the white of my eye otherwise a damaged cornea could be a big issue also I disinfected the eye as you know chicken beaks are dirty I am good now

They definitely love eyes. They are so curious and go after anything shiny. We have the sweetest chickens who love children, but we warn all little people to keep their faces away from the hens. Those beaks are strong!

This is me at the eye doctor the morning after my little frizzle pullet pecked me in the eye. I ended up with a severe corneal abrasion right below the pupil in my right eye. It was so swollen that I couldn't open either eye for days and couldn't see clearly out of the injured eye for a couple of weeks. It happened at the end of summer and the eye still gives me problems. The pullet was very young and very small at the time. I can only imagine what kind of force a large adult bird could peck an eye with. Ouchies.

Now I finally understand why my husband keeps telling me to keep my face away from my girls...and I just though he was jealous...

OMG, I thought I was the only one dumb enough to have my shoulder chicken peck an eye.

The worst part was I'm already blind in 1 eye. Kind of like the other persons uncle with the spilled pupil (not from a chicken tho). Needless to say I don't let Chika ride on the shoulder with my good eye anymore. Apparently eye injuries & chickens go hand & hand.

I just went back and read what I wrote and hope it doesn't sound rude that I said it was 'disturbing.' I'm sorry if it might have offended you. I know you didn't say anything along those lines, but just wanted to be sure...

Thanks for the idea of goggles for the kiddos .... I have freckles all over and my RIRs have gotten quite aggresive, so I keep everything covered. That being said, they attack anything else moving. The Coopers hawks in our neighborhood now stay clear.

Eye pecking is no joke. This weekend I reached into the coop to grab the eggs and one of my girls went for the eye. Thank goodness I must have blinked because she didn't scratch the eye or tear the cornea, but she should popped some blood vessels. I'm investing in goggles for the little neighbor girl that comes over!! Thank goodness it was me and not her!
