Chickens really peck people's eyes out!

My grandparents had a rooster that tried to peck my eyes out when I was about 18 months old. I still remember it. I was facedown in the barkdust and every time I looked up he'd attack my eyes. I ended up with cuts all around my eyes, and still have a dark spot on my sclera where he pecked some dirt into it. I'm sure most hens wouldn't do it out of aggression, but this roo sure was going for the kill.

Needless to say, we had roast roo for dinner that night.

Yikes!
Good advice here - so far my lap is the closest my girls have gotten to my face, but I'll keep this in mind.
I have managed to scratch my corneas gardening and it hurts like blazes!

My aunt had the same thing happen to her. Her pet chicken pecked her in the eye, it was so bad her face swelled on the side she got pecked. Needless to say she had to go to the doctor and take antibotics.

I need to get my daughter to read this thread. She's always holding our chickens up near her face and I'm always warning her "don't do that, they'll peck your eye out!"

My great Aunt Exa had her eye pecked out when she was a baby. She was sitting on a blanket outside and a chicken jumped up on her and pecked her eye out. I warn my grandchildren every time they come over - don't let the chickens get near your face because they will peck your eye out! I am very careful when I pick the girls up about letting them too close to my face...it's just common sense as they peck at anything and everything.
Another topic - yesterday when I got home from work I went straight down to gather eggs and check on my birds and one of the chickens had poked a huge hole in my most gentle Silkie rooster's comb. It was bleeding out of the hole and from another place on the front part of his comb. I took him inside and gently bathed the come in 1/2 water-1/2 peroxide, being careful not to let the solution get into the hole, then just filled the hole completely up with Neosporin. I am so afraid when I get home that the chicken will have attacked him again. I think it's another Silkie rooster that attacked...this other one is constantly trying to romance the injured Silkie and the injured one tries to fight him off. Do you think the injury could kill my little Silkie (Golden Boy). Should I separate him from the flock for a few days?

Edited for grammar booboo.

Yesterday, one of my favorite chicks, 7 weeks old..a Barred Rock, hopped up and was hanging out on the back of my neck/shoulders. I wasn't expecting it, but all of sudden scooped around and pecked me in the eye. I should've known better because when we she was smaller, she got my eyelid. Today it feels like I have a piece of sand under my eyelid. Ouch! she got me good!
