Chickens won't lay eggs

I've had my one chicken for about a year now and I have had my other one for acouple months. When I got the the new one it was laying and then stopped. And my other chicken had not layed all summer. What could I be doing wrong? I know now that winter is here they can stop laying. But why haven't they layed all summer? Any idea? They used to free range til the new one decided to hop the fence and wander through my city neighborhood. Now they mostly stay in their coop, but it's big enough for the two of them. I've tried putting a golf ball in their boxes, I make sure they have plenty of water. What else am I missing?
