Question regarding dust baths. What should I use for the dust/dirt? Just any dirt from outside? or something from the store?

Chickens love just plain ole dirt!!!

Regular yard soil will work. Some add wood ashes. I just let them pick their own spots and make their own dust baths.

Plain old dirt is fine. If you need to buy dirt to supplement, you can get plain peat moss or topsoil without any fertilizers or other additives.

They will pick their favorite spots. They will try to “dig to China” as the saying goes...and they will look happy doing it!

We just add ashes or dirt or some sand to their favorite spots. Ours stay in a 500 sqft run, so they get little opportunity to destroy. However we did just go through and tamp down all the dirt they had excavated from the barn foundation, then put down large pavers to keep them away from the foundation because their run is up against the backside of the barn. We also put pavers around the inside of the run, against the fence bc they were running the risk of escape via excavation.

Funny thing. I tried to do all the posh dust bathing ideas out there. After seeking out all the ingredients and putting it together they wanted nothing to do with it.

Then a few days later, forgetting about the rejected dust bath I made for them, I visited my local nursery.

I picked up some annuals for the hanging baskets and a large bag of potting soil. What did my girls do, they dusted bathed in the potting soil bag.

So I have found that the thing they like to dust bathe in most is a good old bag of potting soil. So that's what I get for them.
