chickens

Ok I finally took pics of stuff like a few min ago been meaning to since like around when I first signed up pretty sad I know but I just could never find a camera or get it on the computer and what not. but so any ways I finally took like a bunch of pictures of the house and yard and potential coop and stuff and its great they're pretty good and everything but now the only problem is how to get them onto the computer. I took them on my phone and a camera when my phone ran out of memory. It's great but the only problem is I dont know where the camera cord is and I need to get a memory card for my phone so I can transfer the pics to the computer so its annoying but I may have some pics on the comp already so I will look though and see what I can find and what I have and stuff but its just so frustrating

remember the 4x4 rule per chicken in the coop. That's for standards. A dog house seems small for 12 chickens

I say

2 red sex link- brown eggs
2 black sex link-brown eggs
2 welsummers`clay colored eggs
2 white leghorns - white eggs
2 EE's - blue, green, pink, light brown eggs
2 marrans- dark brown eggs

ok thanks yeah I kinda thought that too maybe some could be in one coop and some could be in another coop but pretty close too each other or would that not work? maybe I could make them share a run or does that not work? If need be I could always build one from scratch and/or modify the dog house. Its not one of the little plastic ones, its a wooden one with a shingled roof kinda like a mini house but you're right I still think it may be too small, maybe it could work for like 3 or 4 maybe even like 5 hens but probably not 10 or 12 hens. you are right

you can make a large run and put a couple dog houses in it. 12 hens you would need 8 boxes or so........they need to all have a place to sleep. Some of mine sleep on the floor by their own choice and others sleep on the perch??? 6 hens will give you lets say 5 eggs a day x 7 days =35 eggs a week. I have a family of 7 and we don't eat that many eggs, lol that's almost 3 dozen a week. Start with 6 hens....

2 EE's rainbow colored eggs=blue, green, pink
2 red sex link, RIR's or production reds brown eggs
2 white egg lating breeds

This way you will have different color eggs

Oh yeah thats a good idea. that sounds like a great plan. We also dont eat/use that many eggs. when I first started/thought about getting them I was only thinking a few like I dont know 3 4 5 6 birds then they suggested 10 or 12 and I was like wow thats kinda a lot but ok. lol. I think for a beginner less is more, like fewer to start with would be more manageable then later on I can always add more if need be and/or if I want. It's kinda like food like seconds at dinner lets say you can just take a little to start with and then get seconds if you want more instead of having too much and then not eating it all and/or putting some back. Its kinda the same concept with chickens and loads of other things. its better too have too few/little than too much/many if you know what I mean/catch my drift.

Nope no good pictures loads inside and a few outside but none good (all of fam with yard/land in background) including a bunch during that HUGE '05 blizzard (that was a blast) but no good pics of just land/yard and stuff. argggggg must figure out how to get pics on comp arggggg! lol
any who I got the dog house measurements. Also how much room would I need/how big would the coop (and run too) need to be for 10-12 hens? 5 or 6 hens? I asked my mom how many eggs we go through a week and she said 24, 20-24. I never knew we used that many, but then again she was on the phone and didnt really wanna talk to me cuz she was talking to her friend so I dont know but I guess that is about right cuz she said if we have like 7 people for breakfast then thats like 18 eggs in one morning and like 2 for cooking like dinner and stuff so idk I dont really get her logic sometimes but I guess that makes since so I'll just go with 20-24, I'll use it as like a ballpark number

here are the dog house measurements (copied exactly from the piece of paper) :

Dog House Measurements
From Outside:

Height from center of roof to bottom of house: 5 ft

Length across front: 57 1/2 inches (about 4ft 9 1/2 in)

Length across side front to back: 4 ft

Door height: about 2 ft 11 in

Door width: a little bit more than 17 1/2 inches

Window width: about 15 inches

Window height: about 21 and a quarter inches

From Inside

Side to side: about 55 or 55 1/2 inches (about 4 ft 7 in or 4 ft 7 1/2 in)

Window to door (front to back): about 4 ft or 4 ft 1/2 in

Ceiling to floor: about 4 ft or 4 ft 1/2 to 1 inch (from bottom of center ceiling beam) Center ceiling beam is 5 1/2 in from top to bottom (width) so plus 5 1/2 inches

Note: ceiling measuments done from highest point (center)

Also please note that the "window" and "door" mentioned are actually the frames/openings/cut outs in the house that/where a window and/or door could/should go.

Also would this be big enough for the amount of chickens I plan/want to get? If not how many could it hold/support?

hummmm........maybe 4 ish...lol you got about 16sqft so 4 would be safe but with that 5 ft maybe you could squeeze 6. i would say 4 boxes and a nice perch.

I think my math is right...lol only been 17 years since high school....hahah

Yo might be Ok with 6........ and they really only need it as shelter and laying. If you add a run, you will be fine. here are some picture ideas
