I went out to the coop this morning and found my red cochin hed had died. For the last 4 days she was squeezing herself in the box to help the other cochin brood the eggs. I think another larger bird may have jumped down on her because her neck seemed to be broken. She was wedged in the corner. I feel so bad because she was a really sweet bird. I got her last year from Mark and we were just chatting about her the other day. I also wonder if the other hen perhaps got angry and could have killed her? She was small for even a bantam. RIP my little Lucy chicken.

Hi! Sorry to interrupt... Anybody got Darbella's phone #? Would you call and tell her please her egg box is being held at the PO. Call 603 465 9030 and speak to Kelly.
Thanks!

Hey Lisa! I got the orange slip in my mail box a couple hours ago. I still hope they are not frozen from being stuck on a truck someplace here and I hope they dont leave them in the truck at the PO here. We are having bad weather and ice and snow and everything is a crusty icy mess here. I will let you know how they look when I pick up the box in the morning. Thanks for following up on your end, only for the fact I checked my plowed in mailbox would I have known this. Most of the mail was ruined because the mailman did not shut the door all the way and the plows flared the snow into the opening!

Oh darlene so sorry she was a sweet girl

Thanks Shay, I could not believe it. She was fine last night, setting in the box with the other broody, so the only thing I can think of is when they jump down from the roost in the morning, they laned on her neck or back. her weight was good, no egg binding and she was eating well. So sad when the sweet ones die. I have to ask mark how old she was.

Darleen, I am so sorry to hear about your poor girl. I had a young chicken that died last year after a midget white turkey landed on her after flying down from the roost. It never ceases to amaze me how many lessons we have to learn the hard way.

Thanks, she was small even for a bantam cochin. I need to find out from Mark how old she was. I would love to get another one from him.

Thanks Laura. She always got along with the others and was a great mother. I am hoping to get another one from him, her coloring was so nice. How is it going with my "other" pullet I wanted from you???

I'm so sorry about your loss. It's always tough losing a constant companion.

I work with two local rescue groups (one was recently in the news for rescuing 24 sick cats from a Leominster hoarder) and I will check. Kitten season is already starting, and people are abandoning their pets like mad. It's very sad. I should be able to let you know in a day or so, just depends on when I hear back.

Darbella, it seems to be the month for losses. I lost my "pet" crossbeak a week ago, and last night my very first chicken went missing. I hope she's just gone broody. She was spending a lot of time in the hayloft, and the roosters wouldn't leave her alone. Times like these, I feel that no matter how much I learn, I still feel like I know nothing.
