I think they hatched out since yesterday and the bed of shavings is sooooo deep, i am not sure they will find the scrathc. Man, are they teeny too, small as a ping pong ball or even a bit smaller if that can even be possible! Maybe i will put a plastic dishpan in there with shavings and staple a shallow plastic cup to the inside so they can find the feed. But I just hope they dont catch a chill. I will try and take some pics to post.

what did she hatch them in?

This is a good size dog house that is about 4x6 and of course she decided to make her nest wayyyyy in the far back corner deep in the shavings. I had given them about a foot of shavings, there is a roo and 3 hens that share the house. They are my little free rangers and the eggs were laid by all the hens in the dead of winter and only a few weeks ago did this little mix breed hen decide to brood on them. She actually got off the nest a few times last week to forage with the others, but I had been tossing her pellets too. Those eggs had to have frozen and thawed out several time with the extremes in temps we had the last few months, so I cant believe they hatched! I know there were only 18-20 eggs and the count has not changed so it definitley is the same batch from the winter!

I just came in and instead of taking them out, (there were at least 7 of the tiniest chicks I have seen) I gave her a bug shallow pan of scratch, pellets and corn so the babies can get in it and eat and pushed it in towards her. I also snuck a few more eggs from some BY mixes that came in the mail today and labeled them to see what happens and she rolled them right under her belly! I think I may not buy another bator, but move her to my bigger coop in a pen! I wonder if she will stay broody if I do that?

If you move her and the eggs and chicks you will risk losing all chicks and eggs, leave her where she is, she is doing fine.

So she can keep them warm enough then? Will they know to eat I hope. They are so stinking cute! I see that there are a coiple of ones that look to be pure seabrites! The rest are jet clack except one has a white cap on his head!

LOL believe it or not chickens have been keeping chicks warm, teaching them how to eat and scratch around LONG before human intervention and incubation.
trust me they have those feathers for a reason,
IF your still not convinced get ahold of the hen and slip your fingers up under her breast feathers, You will be amazed and convinced.

Oh yes, I have seen all the skin she must tuck them into when i tried to see how many she was hiding, and birds do run hotter that other animals. It just fereeks me out to think how raw it is and how vulnerable they seem to be yet they are looking good! I wonder if any more will hatch out by morning! I am definitely cutting a bigger opening in the side of that dog house next nice day if she takes them out for a walk! It is onlt a foot square as it is now and if i crawl in I will get stuck at gut level for sure!
