So far we have been pretty lucky but do not want to say that too loud. Everyone made it through the storm OK even though we are still cleaning out

Chickie'sMoma :

could be a rat or opossum possibly?

I doubt it, there were no animal tracks in the snow. I am hoping that the hawk has not figured that it can get in thru the small spaced out sections that are not zip tied in the netting over the pen and then escape thru the same spaces. Otherwise I have got to zip tie the netting every couple of inches instead of every foot. It is really getting to me and I am ready to give up! I do have 2 extra rolls of netting that I plan on running the opposite way to really cover any openings that may be missed. That way there will bee a grid of seams and then I will whip stitch those closed with heavy fishing line. I am planning on getting that game cam mounted and ready by Friday! Then I will by the appropriate means to rid myself of whatever pests I see on the film!

do you have any trees nearby the coop? or is it free standing nowhere near any trees that an animal could climb?

we think this was how i lost 6 chickens this past summer to some animal that got in my coop. the back of the shed has some large pine trees close to it. it crawled in through the vented area under the over hanging roof.

Well, I went down there this morning and I dont know how Wayne cpould have missed this...but a whole section of the netting at the middle of the pen was hanging in! I am keeping them cooped up today and tommorrow, then on friday, my day off, I am going to reinforce the netting and run the other 2 rolls in the opposite direction so that there will be a back up if on section falls in again. I think there were some heavy broken branches that fell on it and made it tear away from the zip ties. Hopefully in the spring I will be able to afford putting real wire across the top. I think it was a hawk that got in yesterday. I have been talking with someone that is liceansed to catch them and they are going to come and take a look for me. They will relocate it if they think it is not nesting in the area. I just cannot believe the amount of hawks and the variety of them I have around here. Sometimes I see 3 in the same tree and they are all different sizes. Why cant they just eat each other!
