They are on the ALBC endangered list too!

That is the reason I find it weird that a hatchery would be selling them.

I just checked Meyer's catalog, they DO sell Buckeyes in their rare/fancy section of the catalog (limit of 25 chicks). It says Buckeyes originated in Ohio, and Meyers is located in Ohio, so it makes sense to me that they would have this breed. I did not order any, but it appears that they sent me one by mistake!

Yes, and I think they are the only chicken breed created by a woman. They are very winter hardy to...so I wonder why they are endangered! LOL

Shay now has a trio of Bourbon Reds. Don't know if she's tried incubating any eggs yet.

Anyone living in NH, just a heads up, there is no grant for testing so far this year. I just got off the phone with the DoA and she told me they are waiting for funds to be appoved by the feds, then they have to see if the govener will allow for some of the funding to go to the testing grant. The price she gave me for testing UP to 50 birds is 25.00 and the milage to and from their headquarters in Concord is .51 cents a mile. Please know that you should and need to be tested for the health of your flock and especially if selling birds at the swaps. It takes them no time and is not at all painful for the birds. All chickens 5 months and older need to be tested. (I thought it was 4 months, but she said older than 5 months)

ETA: She said that they are hoping to have the free grant by mid May if they get approved, so if you expire around that time you may be lucky and get it done for free!

It expired in March... we got in under the wire and were tested last month. I think the same thing happened last year, hopefully they will get it again.

I think at 4 months and younger is when they could test a false positive, so they probably play it safe and test only 5 months and older.
