Sounds like Merle is just like Frizzle.

Frazzles (chickens with two frizzle genes) have tons of health issues.

But when you breed Frazzle x non Frizzled bird you get 100% Frizzles.

But because the health issues in Frazzles responsible breeders never breed Frizzle x Frizzle.

the sloping back was bred in because the slope of the back improves their stanima! awesome, huh?
