There's something similar with Labrador Retrievers in yellow. They have the same range of colors, but the darker reddish ones and the paler almost-white ones are sometimes advertised for extra-high prices.

There are probably some good breeders who produce those colors on occasion, but there are probably some not-so-good breeders focusing on the color and neglecting health & temperament.

I would love to see the whole range of shades be equally common, because some people just like one shade more than another.

Yeah exactly! I’ve seen those “fox red” and the “white” labs as well. It’s unfortunate people take advantage of that sort of thing especially since genetically they’re the same. Although with Labs I feel like the red ones are even less common cause they’ve been more selected away from now and producing mostly actual “yellow” so I guess it’d be harder to get a red one in a litter now but with Goldens there’s still a decent variety even in the same litters.

But yeah, like you said, there are “breeders” if you can call them that that unfortunately breed just for money. But I know of one in particular that happens to have some lighter dogs, though not “cream” but still, and they’re a great breeder. So it does depend. But tbh the BYBs exist in just about every breed even in common colors. And there are some, though not as common, focusing on color while also doing health and temperament at least in the fox reds.

Some people also hunt more with certain colors for some reason.

And yeah, I’d love to see the different shades equally popular and reputable too!

I agree that the “English Cream” Goldens are usually always BYB dogs but TECHNICALLY cream, red, etc. ARE in the standard. The standard states that they can be basically any shade. It mentions varying shades.

Genetically, a cream dog and a deep red dog are the same color. Because the ee locus allows a huge variation in shade. It’s only really the US that is so focused specifically on the exact middle gold color but lots of shades are allowed.

The issue comes when people try to claim that the light ones or the red ones are a separate breed or “rare”, etc. They are not. Goldens can come in any shade. The issue is NOT them being out of standard. It is that they are NOT rare and usually have horrible structure and genetics. But there are plenty of reputable breeders that have lighter or darker dogs. A breeder is not a BYB solely because of the color of their dogs.
bruh thought you where a random person, where is your pfp?
