Chickies due march 19th!

How fun...lots of favorelles in this thread due on the 19th!

I candled tonight - and I could see some were developing! Some of the fav eggs are really porous. I wonder what causes that? I'm loving my brinsea incubator - it's keeping the temps right at 99.5 day & night. I had to add water today - first time I opened up the incubator since I set the eggs. This is so much fun!!

Is it bad to have porous eggs? I candled mine the other day at day three and most of my eggs are porous. What would cause that? Will they still hatch?

All eggs have been in the incubator since Fri/Sat and now one of my silkies has decided to go broody... All other hens want to lay in that same nest. There are 3 unused ones, but who wants to get a cold butt laying in an empty nest, when you can cuddle up on top of a fluffy silkie! So they all stand in line to sit on top of her to lay... Talk about determination.
That means I'm fighting a furious silkie at every egg collection.

I need to take a picture next time I see the pile-up.

I think, I'll try to candle the eggs today and then take a few of the extra BCMs and put them under her to give her something to do.
Could also be a fun experiment: Silkie vs Sportsman

What do you think?

I have a couple of porous eggs too, i think as long as you are super careful to wash your hands before handling those then you should be okay. I know that some people say that you shouldn't hatch them at all, but if you paid for those eggs, I would atleast try, the worst that can happen is that it doesn't hatch.

I would LOVE to see your furious silkie! I have a BO that is broody right now, she started not sitting on any eggs, so I gave her some to sit on! ha!

I would love to see your silkie vs sportsman experiment, i guess i am kinda doing a BO vs my genisus! cool!

Alright, so I took four of the eight Black Copper Maran eggs out of the incubator yesterday and put them under Ms Silkie. Let's see how that goes

@chickygirl55:
As far as I know, the biggest possible issue with porous eggs is that they may lose more moisture than they should.
I know from my raptor breeding days that an egg needs to lose a certain amount of weight during incubation by evaporating moisture, but not too much.
In very precious eagle or falcon eggs, we occasionally had to cover parts of the shell with wax to decrease moisture loss in eggs that were too porous, or file away the top layer in small areas of the shell, if the loss was too slow in very thick-shelled eggs.

But as candle98 said: I wouldn't worry about it too much and just see what happens. They either hatch or they won't.
Good luck

I candled today

18 Silkie Eggs- All of them are veining!
3 OEGB Eggs- Two are veining, the other I’m not sure about.

Brown Egg layers- I couldn’t see veins, but I could see the different shades of colors that were on the white/tinted eggs of the OEGB/Silkies, so I went of off that.

3 Sex-Links- 2 colored correct, 1 clear (does anyone know if I should toss it, or give it a few more days)
2 E.E (green eggs)– one veining, the other I couldn’t see through at all.
9 E.E crosses (brown eggs)- 1 cracked threw out, 7 colored right, 1 can’t see through at all, to dark.
3 Standard Game cross- saw veining.
5 Brahma/ Barred Rock- saw veining, or colored right.

Best of luck everyone!

Nope not ones i bought thankfully, I just got my incubator so i figured id try it out on our hens eggs first before trying to hatch bought ones. Its a big relief to hear you guys say not to worry to much cause i was worried lol.
