Chick's death....

First, thank you all for helping me and telling me how i can better my coop. My plans and pleas fell on deaf ears and my plans for doubling up the wire or covering the chicken wire with something smaller were met by comments like "Its for chickens, thats why its called CHICKEN wire" and "So what if it dies, it costs more to work on that coop than it would just to replace them as they died". When I got home today, one of my favorite chickens way laying there with part of it's guts hanging out due to a cat attack, just barely alive. In a panic, I packed up all of them, but one, and took them to their new home a little early. The injured one is in my upstairs bathroom with a heat light on her. I truly don't think she'll make it, but I want to make her comfortable in the meantime. She is doing better, chirping a bit and throws a fit when I pick her up. Normally it wouldn't be, but today, that is a good sign. All because my parents wouldn't pay for some freakin wire...Thats it. Im going to Lowes as soon as possible and I'll just have to find a way to pay for it.

I am so very sorry. Losing such a sweet innocent animal is heart-breaking.

There are other options besides Lowes. You might get lucky and find someone selling chicken wire somewhere like Craigs List or in your local newspaper. Maybe try garage sales? We found a huge amount of chicken wire for a very cheap price at a Habitat for Humanity building supply re-sale store. Look around, you may find a good deal. Good luck!

Yes. She isn't dead and I'll probably get yelled at by somebody for doing this, but my mom is a vet tech. She and I stitched up the chick in my bathroom. My mom looked at her and said that her crop was what was hanging out. We had to use a needle and thread (don't yell at me), but we got her insides back inside where they can stay moist. She is running around and trying to fly now. Feeling much better. She's eating and drinking. I hope she makes it through the night. I know the way we sewed her up wasn't the best, but there are no bird or farm animal vets around and my mom knew what she was doing. The organs were drying up and we but sterile water on them to keep them moist during the 'surgery.' It was the only way to even give her a slight chance at survival. Of course, if she survives we'll have to remove her 'stitches' when it begins to heal. Can't let it heal too much, might not be able to get them out. People griping about this not being humane will be ignored. Its better than letting her die.

That's great that you tried saving her...As long as she's trying to move around and be frisky, then she's got a chance.

Awww, the poor thing....Im so very glad you at least are trying to help her. WHATEVER it takes...be it regular thread, or sutures....if it works...that will be one lucky chickie! Good luck....she and you are in my thoughts!

Are you still in school??? If so, you might want to talk to the FFA leader and see if anyone out there could help you out. I know for us, we have 2 kids now that belong to the FFA and we are always helping someone with something... wood, wire, nails... what ever it is they need. You might also try contacting your local 4-H for help

Hey Stormhorsey. Unless other problems set in, like infection or shock from blood loss, your chickey should be fine. She will need to be separated from the rest of the bunch and not jostled or handled except for occasional inspection. She's just like us, except much more delicate. One good thing about most animals, though. They may do things a bit different than before (walking, flying, etc.) but for the most part they usually don't stay traumatized from injury for very long. They're delicate but then again, they're really pretty tough. KnowhutImean? Keep us posted on your (her) progress. This is a learning experience for all of us.

Hope your girl makes it! Sounds like you have done all the right things that you could do, and now it's up to her to do the healing.
