I have five chicks hatched by mums outside. I saw two looking like they couldn't breathe properly and has since worsened and they just sit gasping with its eyes shut. I've brought them in. But now all the other chicks are showing early symptoms. What can I do? I know chicks don't just recover. I tried to buy antibiotics but the shop said I could only do that on prescription.
Help? :( :( :(

Do you know whether they started eating and drinking? How old are they? Are the mothers okay?
They're two weeks old and have been eating, drinking and growing fine until now. All but the weakest has a full crop. The mothers and rest of the flock seem 100% fine.

Toxins or coccidiosis are possibilities. You can try an epsom salt drench, where you add 1 teaspoon of Epsom salts per cup of their drinking water, and make sure it's the only water they have for one day. You can even direct dose it, which I have done with a full grown chicken but never with a chick. If you think it could be coccidiosis, you would want to treat with Corid, which is available over the counter at pretty much any feed store if you don't have it on hand. I'm sorry, most things with chickens are a guessing game we lose more often than we win. All you can do is try.

I'm not sure if its coccidiosis as they don't have diarrhoea but definitely some sort of respiratory infection. I've got some stuff from a fellow chicken owner and there is nothing more I can do. I just hope all five don't die.
Trying to keep the two inside hydrated but they've now lost their appetites, its not looking great :(

UPDATE. My chicks didn't get better, they just got worse :( I actually took them to the vets (a first for me) and they gave me some stuff but its more to stop a second infection as this is likely a viral infection. Three died after wheezing away for a few days and not eating. I am hopeful for the remaining two, although they have a little rattle they're still eating and running around.
I've had chickens all my life and this has been by fair the most depressing case. It's not so much that they died it was that they struggled one after another. But at least they aren't suffering anymore and my other chickens are fine. Not quite sure how they got it but we do live near lots of pheasants so I suspect them.
