Chicks from TSC

I'm in TN and my local TSC's also require a purchase of 6. I don't know if it's a law or not, but it makes sense to me. It's still a lot better than buying a minimum 20 or 25 from many mail order hatcheries.

Sorry you lost one, although since you only wanted 2, maybe it's a blessing in diguise.

Our TSC in several cities have it posted no returns or exchanges, 6 minimum, no touching or handling either.
As for a chick dieing a few hours of you getting it, it most likely showed symptoms of being sick when you got it.
You need to watch the chicks and pick ones that are up and eating, drinking and active. Just like picking out any other pet. If you pick some out and have a few to go and they are all freaking out, wait until they settle and show their normal behavior again. Sure it's annoying to the worker, but getting a healthy chick is worth taking your time.
You also said you only wanted two, so no reason to fret that you lost one. It's a savings over straight from the hatchery to your PO anyway...

First let me say this isn't my frist Rodeo. I have been around chickens and chicks all my life and I have hatched and raised many bantam chicks. I can understand if the chick had died after I had it for a longer time but for it to die after 4 hours. And I should mention I did everything in my power to save it for over a hour. My feeling was the chick was in trouble before it left the store. It really no skin off my back, I won't be in the poor house over $2.50. I just felt their customer service was bad and maybe I'm spoiled from the local feed and seed stores around here, they know you by name and know what feed you usually buy, like I said good customer service goes a long way in my book.

Maybe it's your state law that they can. Here in NY they make everything harder.

some places (seem to) only have this rule (enforced) during spring, also if you already have chicks you might be exempt.

I went into TSC the other at took a peek at the chicks. The ones at my local store had been shipped too late and were dying before the poor employee's eyes. The problem is, the people there have little to no experience raising chicks, so the mortality rate is quite high. I am sorry for your loss.

The TSC in Oswego NY is within city limits and therefore must sell in lots of 24!!!!! It's a city law. Duh. Needless to say, after their 1st or 2nd yr...they no longer sell chicks. So...the qty thing is mostly law...but the customer service thing is all them.

Chicks here never last long. You have to get there within a few days of shipping or they are gone. If you call them, they will hold chicks. We have great customer service and you can get as few or as many as you like.

I'm in Ohio and on every bin it states that by law you must buy 6 chicks. Some stores seem to choose to ignore this policy if you already have chicks. When I was looking for the chicks that I wanted I have 3 TSC's that aren't exactly close but not to far of a drive. One in ohio and 2 in PA. The one in ohio makes you buy 6 no matter what but the one in New Castle let me buy 4 because that was all they had left in the one breed that I wanted but when I went back 2 days later when they got in a new shipment I planned on only getting 3 gold comets but my daughter wanted some tetra tints so I ended up getting 6. My 4 Australorps were doing good but when I added the 6 new ones they seemed so much happier. They all run around and play and goose eachother . They are quite funny !! Now a friend got 2 chicks from a friend of hers and 1 died the night that she got it and the other one was not doing good so she went to tsc and got 6 chicks and the one original perked up and is doing great. In most places it seems pretty easy to find homes for extra chickens but you will probably find that its so hard to give them up once you have them lol . Good luck with your new chicks !!

Hi there! i posted a new topic before I read yours...had the same experience with my bantams...I have had two die out of four....so sad about it. BTW the 6 chick minimum is not a state law in TN it's a TSC rule, and I managed to only get two the first time because they had only a few left. I got my four araucana chicks from a local mom and pop feed store and their doing great. I think tiny bantams are extra sensitive to stressful situations

Sorry for your loss.
