Chicks hatched from cracked eggs!

There is no way to make her broody. Some may go broody if you leave eggs or fake eggs in the nest box. Also depending on what weather you have where you are she may or may not go broody. Some go broody at the drop of a hat others never go broody. You can't interfere with nature.

I would give the article a read that I left you in a previous post. At the bottom of the article there is a link to the broody hen thread. lots of great info on it.

If you want a broody hens, you should get a breed that commonly goes broody. Often times people will give away hens that go broody since they want layers and not brooders. I got 3 nice hens this year that the owner didn't want because they were broody. One has gone broody twice since June and is sitting on her second clutch. The others have not gone broody. Yorkshire is correct, you can't force them. If you want to hatch eggs you'd have better luck with an incubator. Hatching indoors in the winter is safer than doing it with a broody anyway. ;)

Hello All,

I had an accident with the incubator lid and cracked an egg badly. There are several cracks, little blood and some membrane exposed. I scotched taped it all immediately as I don't have candles. My question is when I lock down at 18 days should I put the tape side facing down? I am not sure a chick can get through the tape if it chooses that side to pip.

Thanks!

What day is your egg on? If there is blood and membrane hanging out you might just want to call it quits. When you lockdown, candle the eggs and put the air cell so the biggest portion is on the top.

Happened on day 14 and now on day 16. Where the shell is missing the membrane is intacted. There was on little spot of blood coming up between two cracks.

So I'll hatch it upright with the air cell on top? Normally I hatch the eggs laying down.

Thanks,

For the help!
