Just put my week old chicks in the coop. Without the light it was 85. But have it on anyway just in case. They love it.

My thing is dont sweat it. Let the birds regulate the heat. I just hung mine 3.5 to 4' off the coop floor at one end. (6 weeks old now).

When they were 2-3 weeks ...4, before I transfered them to the coop, I hung the lamp 2-3 ' from the floor of the brooder at one end.

Anyway, the chicks will move closer to or away from the heat lamp based on what they need. In Ga and found that with tem variation from one day or night to the next here in early spring, you just cant keep it regulated from one night to the next. Just my opinion based on a first time batch of chicks.

And I am turning lamp off during the day - 70 +/- degrees

K thanks. They seem to be fine they are just laying around.

I'm brooding my chicks in my coop too. But having a hard time regulating the heat.
I just checked my thermo and it was on 85 without light. They aren't huddled together just laying around and playing trying to fly. Feel much better that they are in a bigger area so they can stretch and move freely.

I switched out the 250w heat bulb for a 150w and its now closer to where the temp is supposed to be.
That's what I have in mine. It's been staying at 85. I work second shift so when I got home I check on them and the temp was 80 so just lowered the light a little. Checked on em this morn and they were all scattered around at the edge of the light.
