chicks panting and then die??? !!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend of mine has a few chicks she hatched from her bator. They all hatched late (2,3,4 days late) and then they didnt hatch..she actually had to hatch them. (Her temps were off but she has it fixed now).They were doing fine at first but then one by one they would start panting and then lay down and die. 3 so far has done this. What could be causing this? I really need to know because she has some of my eggs over there cause I ran out of room in my bator. I dont want to bring the chicks home when they hatch ( due to hatch today)if the others have a disease of some sort. They are hatching in the same bator as the dying ones.

PS: the temp in her brooder is NOT to hot. I thought that they might be getting to hot but her temp is fine and they have plenty of room to get away from the heat. She does have them on puppy pee pads, I dont know if that has anything to do with it.

They are what I call unthrifty. it could be be course of the incubator temp combined with her 'help' sometime helping is not good. Its very hard not too.

I also thought the puppy pads might be the cause.
I have never used them nor have I ever heard of anybody using them till now.

Edited to add: I just did a search on here and some people do use those puppy pads. Maybe its not that.

I dont know...I have helped plenty of chicks since I started hatching years ago and have never had one pant and gasp for air and lay down and die.... (its the painting and gasping for air that is bothering me) if it just died I would say maybe its from their hatching late, temp and being helped and all.​

if you tell her to take the pads out and its help let us know.i have never used them at all but would like to know if it is what is causing it.

I am assuming they are all drinking fine? Also, I would have her remove the pee pads as well. May not help but won't hurt! Newspaper with paper towels on top for a few days, then wood shavings.

what is the temp? they can pant when they are too hot. maybe they are overheated

I'd try using a different thermometer, just to make sure there's no problem with the first one. When something odd is going on, it's always good to just start eliminating possible causes. I'd also take out the puppy pads.

Has she used anything in the house that can be a problem for chicks? Over heated any non-stick cookware, cleaned the oven, used any scented candles, used any air fresheners, that sort of thing? Artificial fragrances are neuro-toxins and birds are more sensitive to them than humans are. Pet birds have been killed by all of these things.

I can't think of anything else right now.
