chicks safe with rooster or no??

I have a mamma and 5 chicks. Are she and the babies safe from the rooster or will he try to harm them in some way? Right now I am alternating their time free range but the roo can fly out of the enclosure. It is goint to be hard to continue like this for any length of time.

Roosters generally don't bother mama hens with chicks. Personally I think the hens put the fear of God into them, and every other bird in the flock. Hens are fierce protectors of their chicks and will keep them away from everything that she perceives as a potential danger.
