Hi everyone! I’ve got some 2 week old chicks who have been getting very lively. They have been standing in their feeder and kicking the food everywhere. I had a rooster who used to do this when he was a baby, none of the girls did it, does that have any relation to rooster behaviour or do some pullets do it anyway? Is it foraging or something like that?
Thanks in advance :)

They’re probably trying to take a sandbath, and at that age, they should be getting some dirt from whereever you’re going to put them is so they can get used to the bacteria and such that lives there, get some Corid, and some dirt.

Normal chicken behavior. They’re scratching like they would when they forage. There are feeders that are designed to keep them from being about to scratch or beak food out. They usually have holes just big enough for the chick to dip it’s face in.

Especially as they get older it's normal for them to start trying to forage in whatever is available.
