Hi, I am looking into getting a few chickens. Maybe 4 or 5. I am wanting this to be something I can do with my daughter. She is 6. We have cold winters sometimes snow. This year we had quite a bit of snow. Summers are hot and humid. Can anyone suggest a particular type of chicken. I would also like them to be docile since my daughter will be joining me in the coop. Thank you!

I live in a very humid environment and Buckeyes do well here as do Turkens and Easter Eggers. The Buckeyes are probably the most chill but I don’t really handle my chickens. When I was more hands-on Delawares were a great breed for all of the above.

The pea-comb breeds are good for cold winters. I love my easter eggers and olive eggers, and I've recently added Brahmas and Buckeyes to my flock. I get the northeastern USA version of hot and humid, and all my breeds do just fine (see my signature for breeds). I think if you have southern-USA style heat and humidity, you would do better with a light bodied breed with a large comb.
