Chicks With Two Mommas! (pic heavy)

I've been keeping an eye on them and so far it seems good... but I don't want anything to happen! Ack!

I've never had that happen, ever. I like it when there's more than one Mom . . . the chicks run back and forth between the mothers, it's cute. If I were you I'd just leave them alone and keep an eye on them, only intervening if you notice trouble. I'd be surprised if anything bad did happen.

That was kind of my logic. They've been sharing golf balls without fussing (sometimes one has almost all, sometimes they have equal numbers... but no pecking or fighting over them that I've seen). I kind of figured that if they wanted to share the "eggs" they would be okay sharing the chicks... kind of like that was what was natural for them. So far the chicks run between the two and climb over both of them and they don't seem to care. I've never seen the silkies more than a few feet from each other anyway... I check them every few hours though, just in case!

Thank you! I don't use anything fancy, just a somewhat old basic point-and-shoot camera... it is the Canon PowerShot A570 IS . ($199 or $150 refurbished - mine is a few years old)

For the pictures I put it on the auto setting, and then turned on the "macro" feature (it looks like a little flower symbol). Then, just hold the button down half way for a second to focus on the chick, then take the picture

I wouldn't worry either. I let all three of my Silkies brood 9 chicks in July. Here is a picture of them. They only fought once which resulted in one of the hens having a huge bald spot on her head.

5 of the chicks were White Silkies. Same father and any of the hens that raised them could be their mother. And 4 mixed breeds. 2 SilkiexEE, 1 SebrightxAustralorp (don't know how THAT one happened

), and a SilkiexRIR.
Here is a picture of them too.

Year of the Rooster, those are adorable! I want to see the pics of them all grown up.

And... I'm a terrible chicken mom. I just went and checked on them for the second time tonight and one of the chicks is dead :-(

I thought I had figured out all the places a chick could get lost, but I guess I missed the most obvious. There is a 6" piece of wood that keeps the shavings from falling out the door... it hadn't even dawned on me that there was a gap between the wood and the door. He must have jumped up the few inches, and fallen down in the crack. :-(

He felt cold but still bendable... I pushed him under a silkie and reached under and rubbed him a little, he opened and closed his eyes a few times but... blah. I think it was just the nerves. :-(

I want to cry :-(

So sorry to hear you lost one Tofu. Freak accidents do happen. It's why we call them accidents and not deliberates.

At least you didn't lose him due to the mommas fighting over him. Which one was it? Hopefully not that darling little goober in that second picture....which is absolutely priceless by the way!
