Thank you:) He's only 9 months now. His parents were the super short legged Chi's and he is, too. He looks like a brute due to his deep chest, so I know what you mean. He was bought as a pet, so if he's not perfect I'll get over it.

People around here are selling those long legged, looong nosed, psuedo Chihuahuas that look like rat terriers. It's infuriating. I don't breed Chihuahuas and he will be neutered ASAP. I am enjoying this thread, makes for some good reading.

I really don't see the point of arguing over a difference of opinion.
Being as you asked, no, I do not health test. I choose not to breed dogs that are not 4 years or older an I cull any dog that has any health problem worse than a cold from my breeding program. Sometimes there offspring if it is a genetic something. I also dont breed a dog more than once a year an never to a related male. Those restraints have me at a point now that I am not producing any pups at this time even tho I get constant phone calls asking about them. I do have future litters planned if everyone is still healthy at that point.

My dogs get to go to the river, to the park, to ball games. Anything I do they do. But they do not compete.
If you don't agree with my breeding plan, that's fine we don't have to agree.

As for how I use the term puppy mill, to me it means anyone with 30+ breeding females of more than one breed stuffed in kennels an never loved. They are everywhere, not just where the latest documentary was filmed.

Do I think puppy mill owners are bad people? No, I think they are farmers putting food on there family's table the best way they know how. Because I chose a different road does not make there road wrong, just different. I think burning coal is bad for the earth but I dont hate on coal miners for feeding his family. Same with dogs. I dont like the look of a deer head chihuahua but see nothing wrong with people that do breeding them an selling them. AKC standards are just that. There standards. Just because they have a standard does not mean the rest of the world is wrong, just different.

A good hunting dog or hound dog is worth his weight in gold. AKC registry for what make a good working dog doesn't mean diddly. I hate what the AKC standards have done to the Basset hound; they look very different than they did 50 years ago. If one chooses the AKC route that's fine if the dog isn't going have health issue's. But to breed to a standard that has known health issues is bad. My hound is a great dog but her ears aren't ten feet long so she wouldn't meet AKC standards and I couldn't give a rip less cuz I loveeeeeeeee my doggie. And she is every bit as awesome as the mutts I've had.

This is simply not true. AKC performance events allow breeders to showcase the working abilities of their dogs. Actual verifiable performance records rather than word of mouth are very helpful. It's like buying a team roping horse that someone has never taken to a rodeo, but apparently he does great at home; not especially convincing. Some bloodlines are better at performing certain tasks than others, with no record keeping it's not possible to trace these lines.

AKC registration and common sense can be very useful in selecting a working dog.

As for Blueticks, they are not recognised by the AKC anyway.

I stand corrected, they are a recent addition.

Slightly baffled as to why correct length ears would be a health problem. Hounds are more prone to infections, but an extra couple of inches isn't going to alter that, it is due to the floppy shape not the length. The ear length in hounds is important as the ears waft the scent up from the ground helping them to trail. It's all about FORM TO FUNCTION, not vanity.

Honestly..there REALLY is no right OR wrong answer in this ..
to each their own..in my opinion..
Some people want mutts..they feel they are better dogs and healthier...
some people want a pure breed, but dont really care about ALL the silly AKC rules...
Some people only want a high bred, AKC standard pure breed dog...

WhatEVER... who cares....
its my money... i'll spend it on what I like.... And sometimes i want a AKC high breed..and sometimes i want a mutt... their still ALL dogs..

It's called a discussion. If everyone agreed this board would be a little on the quiet side.
