My 10 year old wants to start showing his silkies. We have the quality birds I think. There is no program with the 4-H here for birds. Can any child show at sanctioned shows or do they have to be with a 4-H group?

In most 4h type shows and fairs he can show as an independent. Also in a regular APA or ABA show he won't need to be in 4h. You can also look into a grange club, I think they still have those in some places. Or you can contact the 4h about starting a new club.

my daughter is 6 and is to young to show 4-h so she shows open at the county fair. for apa they don't have to be in any club. good luck

yes he can still show, but he can only show in open shows. they have shows that are just for 4-H members, and open showswhich are for everyone

Kids can show at any APA/ABA show as a junior. Every show that I know of welcomes juniors with open arms and go out of their way to make the experience a positive one. Join the American Silkie Bantam Club, they have a forum just for juniors. They can provide tons of tips for preparing the birds for showing.

The one requirement is that the birds be NPIP tested. That will require a call to your State Vet to get the info about testing.
