children under 5 shouldn't be around pets

Oh please. It's just one more thing they want to have control over, and Dr.'s trying to convince parents they know better than mom's do. PUH-LEASE!

I completely agree! I could go on and on about this subject because it really irks me how the world is going crazy. I grew up playing in orchard, eating the dirt pies I made, playing with dogs, kittens, bugs, rolling in the grass etc. Yeah, I should have washed my hands a bit more than I did, but a little dirt never hurt no one, as my Nanny always said!

Well that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 'Cause you just know some idiot parent is going to read that, freak out and take their child's pet away. It's ridiculous how sterile people think kids need to be. I grew up with 6 birds, several snakes, 20 guinea pigs, 10 chickens, numerous dogs, one cat, a scorpion, hamsters, lizards, salamanders, gerbils, rats, a turtle and never did anyone get sick. By expecting everything to be ridiculously clean you are just breeding the super bacteria that can stand up to lysol and all the other disinfectants.

I can't imagine not having pets as a kid or my own kids not having pets.
I have 5 dogs and alot of chickens, they are all handled everyday by all of my children.
We had a cat that just past away last year.
My kids were all born into a house with animals.
Some of my kids do have allergies, but not to animals.
They are allergic (according to their allergen test results) to maple trees and grass.
So should I rip out all my maple trees and grass?

I personally think that animals have alot to teach children, and they learn to be gentle and loving.
I have never had a child be mean or rough with any of my animals.
I think the kids that are rough to animals are the ones that don't own any themselves and don't have the opportunity to learn how to treat them.
Of course there is always the exception where a parent who is not a big animal lover buys their kid a pet because they think they should and then don't take the time to teach them how to treat them.
But on the whole, I think animals are a very important part of children's lives.
If they are going to say that its too risky for children under5 to be around animals then they are going to also have to cut out all the other risky things, which is completely impossible and utterly absurd.

We must chill..... Anitbiotics and vaccinations work in the exact same way. Viruses and bacteria are alive and most of them are harmless. But they breed and change just like other living organisms. And when they are taught to survive they must mutate, well then we need to pay scientists another billion dollors to come up with something new for the diseases to overcome.

We don't wash our poo down the streets anymore like in ancient times. Our environrment IS clean and beautiful. Sit back and enjoy the view...and let your kids have a freakin hamster

My grandparents had a farm, and I grow up partly on it since my mother died when i was 8 an I went to live with my grandparents, I'm now 72 and I think I was still breathing a few mins ago, the only thing I am allergic to is Penicillium, all my kids , grand kids and great grands have had dogs, cats, horses, hamsters and most everything except snakes (i'm afraid of snakes and spiders) but they are all healthy and doing great. I think having animals has been good for them, I Think all children should have animals to take responsibility for, if taught responsibility for something else I Think it helps them not to be so selfish, and to think of someone else besides themselves

ITA!! My daughter actually asked me to clean the cat litter box the other day and said "After all mom it's my cat I want to take care of her." Then this morning she cleaned the bathtub because in her words."You have a migraine and I don't so I want to help."

I don't know why she wanted to clean the bath of all things, lol, but who am I to argue!!

There were seven of us, we grew up in the country around animals. I have five and raised them the same way. I cant imagine living in a sterile enviroment and wouldnt want to anyway!

The world has gone crazy. Whatever happened to fresh air, good food, exercise, and sunshine= good healthy enviornment for children.

I loved my pets as a kid, had a dog and cat I played dressup with. (They ran around in my shirts, socks, doll clothes whatever). They looked funny I guess, but were fun and happy pseudo children- even if they were "germ covered". I fed them from my spoon, all manner of horifying breeches of cleanliness and etiquette. I was rarely sick as a child.

My kids had dogs they ran with, cats they hid under the covers and slept with at night, and horses they rode bareback and steered with a stick.

All of us grew up. All of us are productive, healthy, allergy free adults.

Now my grandkids live in an indoor world, raised on baby formula. Now they are constantly breathing "fresheners" like febreeze, eating melamine, and artificial sweeteners, surrounded by electromagnetic fields of all types, they are sick little things with allergies and digestive problems. So sad.
