Heres one...It is in Zeeland Michigan, and they are selling the thing for $200!
I agree. . . that is really cool! ! ! ! ! I will have to see. . . . I'm building on from found stuff. . . and have started a thread here. . . but I wish I would have thought of this first. . . would have saved time. Maybe if there is a second one. . . I will start with this. . . But i have to finish my first one. Thanks for the input. . . I'm new to this chicken thing! ! ! And I enjoy it.

Recycle and re-purpose...my motto! I think that has great possibilities...even if you took it apart to use the posts for the frame. Our coop was made with all "found" material except the fasteners and paint...think we have maybe $30 in it. Here's a pic...it's only primed; paint goes on tomorrow, but you can see what you can do with "scrap", imagination and elbow grease.

Mickey 328. . . this is great. . . I think I can really relate to most people here. . . with their creativity for using recycled materials for coops. Your coop looks really good! and well made. One clue. . . someone told me the city was giving away FREE paint. . . they do a collection of unwanted paint and then put it in 5 gal buckets for people to take. . . you are limited to colors. . .but there are some good ones. Here is my current coop . . or I like to call it a "coupe". I will try to add more pictures in a couple minutes. I just wish I thought of it sooner. . . I got my chicks before the coop! Ooops!

Crazy Mitch!

Thanks for the kind words, Mitch. Your coop looks great! We too put the cart before the horse, or should I say the chickens before the coop. They're in a rabbit cage just now with a portable pen around it which we move every 3 or 4 days. They're fine now in the good weather but the cage is borrowed and they need something sturdier for the winter.

We just came in from finishing up the first coat of actual paint...had lots left over from painting the house and it's looking good. Going to do one more coat on the trim tomorrow and it will be pretty much done. Now we just need to get the run finished and the girls' new home will be ready!

Our local dump has paint they mix from all the leftovers that are taken in. Not sure, but I think you have to pay for it...but like maybe $5 for a 5 gallon bucket...it's dirt cheap. Hubby found Behr paint/primer mix on the sale rack at Home Depot...was a whopping $7 for a gallon. Since we didn't have any primer, it was great...the other colors went on over it very well. I did have to go buy a quart of special mix though...more for my own choice than for just protecting the wood. Our backyard shed is shaped like a small barn and painted/trimmed the same colors as the house. That's why we chose this gambrel style and decided to go with the same colors. It sure wouldn't be necessary, but for me there's a certain value in the "cutemess factor" LOL

Yea . . .I'm transferring my chickens to the garage at night in a rabbit cage. . .I borrowed and then broke! Shoot! My chickens are 11 weeks old. I have to finish this soon!

I try to keep them in the run as long as possible and get them back ASAP. . . it is getting tight in there. . .I put perches through the bars. . .and some are above and some below.

So are you going to post pictures of your coop painted? I can't wait to see it!

Mitch

Thanks for your kind remarks on our coop page.
It is a bit easier to start with a sturdy structure but the again you have to deal with the given.

We have the first coat of paint on ours yesterday and it's looking good. We have to do the roof yet...we're going with a rubberized paint to make sure it's leak proof, and going to give the trim one more coat. The first didn't cover as well as we would have liked. Got a roof over the next boxes, installed the roost and rigged up the pully for the ramp/door. So, the inside is done, yaay!

We were going to finish the paint and see how far we could get on the run today, but I've got 2 cases of tomatoes that won't sit in stasis for us so today is canning day, LOL. I've enlisted Dave (DH) to help with that some and he only just got home from work, so he probably won't be able to get too far on the coop project today, dang it.

I think our rabbit cage must be bigger...all 6 of ours fit easily in it with room to spare...they all seem to line up against the back wall to sleep anyway. The nights are getting cooler, but no where near being uncomfortable for them, so we're good for a little bit yet. Still, it's about time to move the pen again and we'd really rather move them into their permanent home.

If he has time, I'll have Dave take some pix of the coop inside and out and get them posted later this afternoon. Isn't it all so eggs-citing?? LOL
