I made chili tonight. It's great at first, but a little too hot AFTER you swallow.

I put in chili powder, garlic powder, salt/pepper and red pepper.

Is it the chili powder or the red pepper that is setting my mouth on fire after I swallow the food????

red pepper is usually red bell (sweet) pepper so it was probably the chili powder. i usually only add a pinch, then set it out for people to add in to taste. same with hot sauce.

ETA: The red pepper flakes *I* get is usually bell so sorry I'm wrong for your chili.

that's an idea.

the chili smells wonderful, and really isn't too bad. I'll eat it a little at a time. I'm sure DH will like it.
Usually I get the "2 alarm chili kit" with pre-measured packets, but I was out of packets today under hazardous road conditions, so I just "approximated" what looked like the same amount........eh, I'll get better at this cooking thing by the time I'm like 50.
