I made chili tonight. It's great at first, but a little too hot AFTER you swallow.

I put in chili powder, garlic powder, salt/pepper and red pepper.

Is it the chili powder or the red pepper that is setting my mouth on fire after I swallow the food????

red pepper is usually red bell (sweet) pepper so it was probably the chili powder. i usually only add a pinch, then set it out for people to add in to taste. same with hot sauce.

ETA: The red pepper flakes *I* get is usually bell so sorry I'm wrong for your chili.

that's an idea.

the chili smells wonderful, and really isn't too bad. I'll eat it a little at a time. I'm sure DH will like it.
Usually I get the "2 alarm chili kit" with pre-measured packets, but I was out of packets today under hazardous road conditions, so I just "approximated" what looked like the same amount........eh, I'll get better at this cooking thing by the time I'm like 50.

Sometimes, when I'm too heavy-handed with the spices in my chili, I "cool it down" with sour cream or cheese.

What did your taste test of the "red pepper" reveal?

Ground red peppers are usually of the hot variety. Sour cream or yogurt served on top of the chili will help cool it down.
