A few months ago, during the summer, I felt that I had to "egg-proof" my dogs. I had evidence that at least one of them (Jenny, looking at YOU!) was either stealing or at least, if finding a stray egg, was breaking it, eating the yolk and rolling in the white. So I set up a "nest" of about 3 or 4 eggs on a paper plate and hot-wired it. Now the electric fencer I used was not designed to knock the socks off a horse% it was the mildest ond I could find. It would barely knock the buzz off a mosquito. But a dog's cold, wet nose and tongue are VERY sensitive! So it wouldn't take much to make an impression. Each of our three dogs had an opportunity to discover this treasure trove. Oh and by the way. One of the eggs was broken. No, I didn't fight fair. I wanted to be sure one lesson would be all it took.
So as I say, each dog had a chance to check it out. Ryder, the young b/w Aussie, then Jenny, the 4 yo Golden retriever, and finally Sammy, the 7 yo Sheltie. All of them reacted with a quick yelp and beat a hasty retreat to the house.
As I say, this was months ago. I'd forgotten about it. But today Melissa, my GC, had an egg in her hand and reached it forward to show Ryder what she had. His ears went forward, then back, and he turned around and trotted toward the house. Interesting, I said, Let me see that. Jenny was standing nearby so I set the egg on the ground. She, too, had no interest in it except to get as far away from it as possible, as quickly as possible. Sammy, the Sheltie, wasn't around but I'm convinced we would have been three for three if he'd been out there.
I'm now fully confident my eggs are 100% safe from my dogs.
