China puts a stop to snake-bitten cock-in-a-pot

DH and I used to watch Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern and let me tell you, that man will eat almost anything. It's hard enough to watch him eating that stuff on TV (especially when he's in Asia), can't imagine being the camera crew and having to watch it live.

I have my limits though.

Yeah, but I think we could do without the name calling.

Who is calling names!? I didnt say "they are buttheads". "Nuts" just implies that they do some crazy things with their supper over there!

I call my dog a "Klingon" because she only eats live baby mice...I dont thinks that is name calling either, Klingon's just like their food to wriggle all the way down...

I am sorry. Inhumane is inhumane in any culture. Hurting an animal on purpose or eating a live animal that is suffering is sick. And it shows a lack of compassion that I find disturbing. What kind of culture would do that? I am a pretty liberal person, but I can't close my eyes or condone cruelty in any shape or form.

Also... just saying that it is part of their tradition or culture doesn't cut it. Time to move into the 21st century and quit barbarism.

I am sorry. I wouldn't have read this post if I had known what it was about. Thinking about those poor monkeys just makes me sick.

Ugh *shudders* I swear I am not opening this thread again, 3 times is enough for me!

I agree, everyone can have their own view of vegetarinism vs. omnivorism but plain and simple no matter where you are from, the animal needs to be treated well prior to and during dispatching!

I always like to reiterate that our cows live happy spoiled rotten lives before they go in the freezer. They get names and pets and treats and are dispatched quickly and as humanely as physically possible!

THere are limitations and really in this day in age cant they let go of the old beliefs about the powers you get because of what you eat?

Interesting topic...

Let's make sure to discuss this in an intellectual fashion so that the Staff (*ahem*ahem*) doesn't have to close this thread.

I often wonder what I would think is "normal" if I was born into a family other than my American one. What would I eat? What would I wear? What would my spiritual beliefs be like? The idea is completely fascinating to me, since it seems like chance that I (as a person, or soul, or whatever you would like to call it) was born into the family I have.

Deep stuff, eh?

I agree with you chicken lady. Besides calling the entire country and its people "nuts" would be the same as calling all Americans nuts because some of them do things you don;t agree with - like maybe eat cow or eat only raw foods.

or raise chickens in their backyards!

Can't tell you how many people tell me that my chickens are gross. And many vegans think any type of meat eating is gross and inhumane. Nuts is a matter of culture and time!

WHOOAAA ... You do get deep Chicky Lady...
I have wondered the same thing... I personally dont agree with eating living animals, but we feed our animals living animals .. Sometimes I feel it is more a question of social rather then ethical issues... We as americans treat animals much different then other cultures, most of us feel they have a soul while others feel they are simply here for our food and work... Who's to say who is wrong...
