OM goodness, this is an old post, I want to comment should anyone read it. I am a breeder of the chinese crested dog. I show at akc events. warts? chinese crested? none of mine have had warts, they have had pearlys, but not warts. I just had a litter 10 days ago, and when they are 4 weeks old, ON THAT day we will commence with potty training. it is extra work for me, but ensures my pet quality dogs will more likely be able to stay in the homes i place them in. potty issues are a huge reason a dog wont be kept by a new owner.
I use a half sized playpen, making soft bedding 1/2 of the playpen, and then a hotel sized cookie sheet covered with newspaper. I use Moms urine on the newspaper to seed it. I put the pups in the blanlketed side of the playpen to huddle up. when they wake up they automatically start sniffing around. I steer them towards their Moms urine stain on the newspaper. My work is usually 3 or 4 hours until everyone knows where to potty at. always without fail the following day they are in their huddle, wake up, go to the potty pan, do their business and return to the huddle. by their 6th week I put them in a x pen with that same potty pan. I watch close on that first x pen day and steer any pup looking like it is squatting to the potty pan. other things i do during pre potty training is make sure their feet stay perfectly clean all the time. sometimes they will step in poo on the potty pan. If you let the poo stay on their little feet, they will get used to it and thats not good. after day 2 in the half sized play pen I change the newspaper 3 or 4 times a day, but always save some for seeding. I also change their bedding daily need to or not. Boys are more difficult than girls because they hike when they get older

Problems. I homed a dog in florida 3 years ago, the new mom called me to tell me her dog wouldnt go on the potty pad. I had her rub the potty pad with newspaper and there was no more problem.
Chinese cresteds are very smart dogs that are as a rule VERY loyal to their owners. I sleep with 6 hairless girls every night. No longer do I need an electric blanket!

Chinese cresteds have relitively few genetic issues compared to some breeds of dogs. and even fewer now that we have genetic testing for PRA (one form), VWD, and thyroid issues (one form). Chinese crested breeders pay to have testing done, and do not include affecteds in breeding programs. so the bad genes are not passed and that means a healthier dog.

having a hairless chinese crested does NOT mean you will have a dog with no hair. It ONLY means that the dog has the hairless gene. a hairless CC can have as few as 2 or 3 hairs growing out of their heads, or look as fully coated as a powder puff all are born in the very same litter. a medium hairy hairless will look like it has gone thru chemo if you let it grow out. a very hairly hairless can be hard to distinguish from a powder puff, just have to know what to look for. A hairly hairless is the ultimate showdog, because when shaved to a hairless pony cut it will have plush furnishings.. feet hair is called sox, tail is called plume, and head hair is called of course the crest. spots on them is called lacing. Lacing will devlelop mostly over the first 6 months or even longer. a puppy born with lacing will likely become solid colored because the lacing goes together. Lighter cresteds are born with pink noses and over the first 4 weeks devlelop little spots which eventually make a solid colored nose.

a crested does not have dog claws, instead w=they are hare footed revealing long slender toes which allow them to be good climbers.

they do not have fur, they have hair like you and me and they may lose a few hairs when brusing them. but they dont leave a mess of hair all over your house like the furred dogs do.

I could go on and on but i think this is much too long for a chicken forum (i love my chickies) check my pictures here in BYC to see Helen (she is hairless) sleeping with henry the rooster when he was a chick) While I am a newbie to chickens, I do know lots about CC's should you have a question. They DO make excellent pets sure to keep you entertained if you have 2 of them.
