Go to the sporting goods section in Walmart. I found a flashlight much more powerful for about the same price range. Still not as good as an actual candler, I'm sure but I really like it. Of course I dont have it within easy enough reach to tell you what it is but worth looking.

Thanks!!!! I hate the led light. A person cannot see into an egg with it. Ticks me off!!!

Yeah, I am not much liking them either. They have their limited points, like the bulbs last forever and dont burn out the batteries as fast, but darn it, I want a flashlight to light up the room or at least what I point it at, not just kind glow.

I knew that extra day in the delivery vehicle wasn't good! Hopefully you'll get some cute NN out of this. Which eggs didn't survive?

The 2 banty eggs didn't grow at all, 1 EE egg, 1 darker brown one, 2 of the regular brown ones.

I still have the leghorn egg going strong, it is cool to candle because it is so white.

Colorado postal service is messed up. It took like 1 day to get from Maine to Denver, and then 2 days to get to my house which is 140 miles from Denver.

That happened with my quail eggs too. It is like the postal workers walk from Denver to my house.

Let me tell you something about an actual candler....they run through batteries faster then anything I've ever seen (and my speedlight goes through them faaaast!

) Seriously, I have the ovascope thingy from brinsea and if I don't put rechargable batteries in it, I'm replacing them every few weeks! If the batteries aren't fully charged or brand new, it's not going to give you a good view. I have something called a led lenser...I think we got it from home depot or walmart...its a typical $30 mini mag light type thing. I only change the batteries every few months maybe and I use it for everything including candling.

We've got a mini mag LED and it works like a champ for candling! Its super bright, which helps for me, I was even able to see into a somewhat dark Marans egg!

I have a Mini Mag with the 4 LED upgrade... It works "ok"... I was looking around the dollar stores for a few items and saw a small flashlight with 9 LED's and you could press a button on the package to make it light up and it has a little wrist strap.. WOW!! This thing was BRIGHT!!! Of course, not knowing if it was going to be better than the mini mag, i bought it anyway... I figured, if I couldn't use it for candling, I could always put it in the van... Well, this thing works awesome!! I put a little duct tape around the light so I could get a good seal around the egg and I folded it a little bit before I put it on so it wouldn't stick to the eggs... I love this little light!! I can SOMEWHAT see into my EE's eggs but they are thick.. The rest of my eggs, I can see really well!! Most times when I am candling, I don't even have to pic the eggs up.. I just put the light on the egg and if I see veins or movement, I know it's good...

The best thing about this light, it was only $2 at Family Dollar!!!!!!!! This is definitely NOT a case of, "you get what you pay for"!

GoneHomeGrown, I hope you feel better! My daughter has missed three days in the past week for anonymous bugs

I hate seeing people feeling miserable. But your chicks are gorgeous, and I love the fluffy feet!

I had a second one hatch yesterday, waiting to see if any others do.. three more eggs still in that I have hopes for. One's actually peeping, but no pips! I'll get a chick picture up as soon as I can figure it out! My dear, understanding husband gave me a camera that he'd set up with a wireless card... so when I took pictures, it uploaded them straight to my laptop while I was still shooting. Well, that laptop's dead and on its way back to Dell, and I have no clue how to upload pictures..

And my first hatched little brat yelled ALL day yesterday. He yelled nonstop in the incubator for a few hours, so I finally took him out and had him in the chair with me and the heating pad. He kept yelling. So, into the baby bin with a stuffed animal, the heating pad, and the runt chick from the NYD hatch. The other chick got cozy and slept, the new one just kept on with the yap yap yap.. I finally put him back in the incubator. He didn't shut up until the next one hatched to keep him company, like he knew the other one I'd set him in with wasn't his hatch-mate.

In other news, I had another green egg today! It was IN the coop, and IN the nest box when I let everybody out. What the heck? They can't just change egg color on me, can they? I don't have any pullets I'm waiting on... The youngest two big birds started laying in November. Can it be something they ate?

I think I'm gonna candle today. They're on days 8 and 6 if I'm counting right.. but I reeeeally want to see if there's anything going on in there.

And oh my! Poor Betsy! Somebody needs to knit that poor girl a sweater. I must be missing something, I can't tell if mine are molting.. seems like they should be this time of year. Maybe I spend too much time looking at them and just don't see it. There are feathers laying all over the place, but nobody looks naked.
