Chinese New Year Hatch/February 3 2011

A picture of my quail eggs. The button egg is the smaller one.

To dye the chicks you inject the food coloring into the small end of the egg about a half inch from the tip. Never into the air sack. The chicks will stay dyed until they shed their down. You use a 1/2" needle to prevent it from going in too far. I will post pictures when i dye the eggs.

Glad he's feeling better. I got mine out when I was 5 1/2 months pregnant with my oldest daughter. Scare was about 3 inches long. I was thin. Now it's about 8 inches long. LOL Hey wait. That's not funny!

I'm so angry with the way the PO handles our shipments. I just know it has to be when it gets out here and goes to Stockton. I'm thinking maybe I'll try to get some shipped to the Bay Area and pick them up. Don't know when I'll be able to do it, but it is a thought. Maybe that woman I can't stand at the PO here, sees my boxes and just abuses them for me. I'm starting to take it presonally I guess. huh?

My birds went through such a horrible moult. I just didn't think to take any pictures at all. Wish I had now! Thing is I was raking up so many feathers I didn't have time for pics.

On a good note I've been watching combs and they are getting redder. Not bright red yet, but they are getting there. Not of the younger pullets are doing anything though. I wish my Favs would start changing. I love those birds. They're so cute. I need to build a bachelor pad for the roos. I don't want any accidents out there with them. Although at this point I'd probably end up with olive eggers, so not totally terrible, but I need to rebuild my flocks and I want to make sure no hanky panky is going on.

Would be nice if no more major catastrphies happen for the rest of this hatch. I was planning on being in here all the time. I miss Mahonri's thread. LOL Man that was fun. Not that I'm a stalker, but I love following his threads. hehe

I don't think it's bacteria. I have used different bators. Gotten eggs shipped on different day. It's gotta be the PO. I see too many others having great hatches with shipped eggs and I did too up until July. I've had a few hatch, I think I'm at .5% since I've ordered so many over the past few months. I clean my bators with bleach and water and rinse really good , then dry. It's always worked before, so not sure what's going on.

I can't wait to finally get to put my new Game roo out with my girls. I want to see what kind of colors I'm going to get out of them. I have different color hens and don't even know what the colors are called, but I figure with an assortment I might get some that look cool. I love those birds. They don't require all the special things that the other breeds do. Well, now that I think about it I guess they get more. I have 3 in my neighbors yeard right now going through they're compost. I hate when they do that, but the neighbors don't care that they're there. They even toss them treats. That's the main reason they even fly the fence. We clipped wings last year and they still made it over, so I guess I may have to be cooping them more often eventually. The last coop I had for them became the juveniles coop. I gave up trying to keep them in when I was feeding and watering. They hate being cooped. Such great foragers. I'm kind of hoping once the roo comes out of quarentine that one of the Game hens becomes broody. There are losts in my neighborhood and I love watching the mommas and chicks that sneak out and hang in the front yards.

I so hope I have eggs here for the Easter hatch. I'd like to have something to show for all the stress. Come on FBCMs! Momma needs some dark brown eggies to hatch.

Sumatra, I would love to see those pictures

Out of curiosity, why are eggs always shipped via USPS? Can they go through FedEx or UPS? I wonder if they would have better chances with another carrier in certain parts of the country where perhaps the PO has a habit of mishandling the packages.

well i dont have any moulting pics to enter hence why i havnt entered.
but good news on the eggs i found a brighter torch & i have 3/12 of the shipped eggs still going strong. 2 had started but have since quit & the rest never started, had like 4 with detached air sacs.
5/6 of the splash & 3/5 from the black still going despite the temp spikes & blowing up the switch lol not bad for my 1st time in a home made bator.
now i just gotta keep fingers crossed that they hatch.

I won't have any pics until day 10 for my eggs so about 5 days from now or so.

Here's a link to the project with info on the actual process. I learned from a veterinarian friend of mine who was a 4H leader. they really do hatch out colored.

Way way back when I was a little girl, they would do this and sell chicks for like a quarter at the Woolworth stores. We always got those chicks but none ever lived more than a couple of days.

I thought it was against the law to day them now.

Was I misimformed, cause I could never be wrong.

It is illegal in some states. I find it easier to dye them with koolaid.

Well, I did lockdown for my batch tonight... all the BLRW eggs were toast. Not a suprise with my bator temps bein what they were for about a week.... The BW Ameraucana and Rock/Marans eggs did well. I got 14 out of 20 into lockdown, with one of my own eggs from my BC Marans pullet

Also tonight, I set 14 BLRW eggs and 14 from my flock (2 WCBlue frizzle polish roo over smooth WCBlack pullet) and the rest, various mixtures of all sorts of breeds.

Wolftracks...I hope you can get some better luck!!! I wish my family was closer to you, I'd say have the eggs shipped to them and then pick em up from there... to avoid your PO... but they're on the coast...

I set 7 eggs and I candled two nights ago and they are all developing! I'm so excited. After such a bad hatch last time I'm excited to have such a good start! Now I want to candle every 5 minutes!
