I'm going to have to run out and take one. Wait till you see MrCopper! lol I was looking at him yesterday going "what is the world is going on with your neck feathers?" then it hit me....he just turned a year old. I'm sure he's molting!

I'm just catching up! I have a few belated comments... sorry I'mlate!
Wolftracks -- my husband doesn't eat eggs, period. My live-in-mother-in-law buys her own.. she grew up on a farm, but won't eat fresh eggs from our chickens. My father will eat them if I guarantee he won't find blood spots. Oh well, right?
gryeyes, Yes! Those are purdy eggs.
I love the colored ones!! Big mystery -- I found a green egg, broken and frozen solid, just outside my barn door this morning. It was chicken sized, and a very pretty green. I have a few easter egger chicks, but they're 9 weeks old and 3 weeks old, and definitely not running loose. Everybody I have lays brown or white. I'm guessing I had a visitor stop by? The guy next door has chickens, but just leghorns..
daisychick -- the first picture of your pink-bubble-wrap eggs looks like someone stuffed an egg carton full of marshmallow peeps. Now I want some. C'mon Easter!!
Sumatra -- I may go looking for quail eggs at some point! I need to figure out where I could keep them, though. Guessing they don't just go in with the chickens?
I'm going to try to wait a few more days to candle
I set another 14 two days after the initial 18, and I hope to check them all at once... fingers crossed, we really want a few of these babies!
In the meantime, though, I have just a handful of eggs due to hatch tomorrow from my flock of odds 'n ends out back. Mine never seem to cheep BEFORE they come out of the shell... I checked this morning to make sure the temp and humidity were still good, and nothing was happening. Jumped in the shower and heard some very insistent peeping when I got out. Brand new little yellow chick!
I can't wait til my husband and daughter get home to see that! Brand new chicks will never, ever lose their appeal!
Mama is one of my mutts, either Foggy or Scratch, who were from my first 6 babies (the OOPS, the auctioneer said BANTY, not GUINEA, group)... they're the only ones who lay white eggs. Dad I think is wheaton marans. Mom (and all 5 siblings) was totally black as a chick, clean legged.. this little baby is yellow with some nice feathered feet.
And very, very loud! I have a mutt brahma egg pipped now, and I'm waiting for #1 to have some company in there!

Quail are really easy to raise. Each bird should have 2' of space. You can build a mini chicken coop somewhere for them to live in. The pen should be covered, since they fly well. You can also raise them in cages. I have a quad of them in a 2'x3'x2' cage and they do just fine. They need to be fed a gamebird ration that has a higher protien. They are so easy to keep and they eat so much less than chickens do I just love them. Not that my chickens are going anywhere.

I now have 17 Coturnix eggs and 6 eggs from my chickens. 1 Serama egg, 2 Sumatra eggs, and 3 Seabright Cross eggs(The descendants of Peepers, my very first hen.) I'm really excited about those Peepers eggs. This will be the 4th generation of Peeper's children.

Checking in. I set a little earlier and we are due to hatch on the 29th. Of course I can't stay out of the bater, so I did candle 2,3....4ish times.
The Brinsea makes it too easy, I candle them right in the racks. So I don't feel too bad, since I don't have to handle them.
So far. 0/3 Seramas, they were test eggs from a hen I have that just started laying, so not surprised.
3/6 comet x silkie from my flock.
7/8 sizzle eggs. (shipped eggs)
I am happy with this and just hope they all make it.

Hey there everyone. I haven't been around much. Between getting set to start school and a stupid head cold or bug of some kind that I have been fighting for a week now, I have been just crazy and misserable enough to scream. Of course it is not enough for me to call in sick to work tomorrow though.
OK, enough of me whining
My eggs seem to be doing well. I did give in a candle a few just a little bit ago. I was not getting a very good view so decided to call it quits for now and try again at about 10 days. I did learn that I need to mark my eggs from now on if I am going to stagger them though. I had pulled the other eggs and put them into the hatcher Sunday. I had one hatch yesterday afternoon and could hear another one, but could no see the pip from the window. I checked again this morning and same thing. About an hour ago, I went to check and still a very strong peeping, but no sign of an egg hatching. Then I hear movement on metal. Wait a minute, thats not right. No, it can't be. I look into the other incubator on top of the hatcher. I apparently mixed up one of the eggs and the little tuffy had hatched right out in there with about 26 ish humidity. I went ahead and pulled it out as it was dry and fluffly and then pulled the other chick. I did not really want to open the hatcher yet, but the little one in there was seeming a bit lethargic (not just the tired resting). Tuffy has gotten it livened up well and both are eating and drinking already.
