Wolftracks, congratulations on the marans eggs! And I would love to try and hatch an emu egg... no idea what I'd do with it though. I saw them on
eBay and just..
. I mentioned it last night. My husband GLARED at me. I don't think I'll be doing that any time soon. I told him, when I first set up the incubator, he didn't notice it was there for like a month... not like he'd notice I was incubating a monster egg. I wonder what sound the new hatchlings make.. I can't imagine it's a cute, insistent little 'Peep!' ...let's see a hawk try to make off with THAT.
When you candled, did anything look like it was moving along? I saw what you said about the air cells.. I don't think I've ever had one not do that, I thought it was normal. The cell is centered at the small end, but loops down on two opposite sides of the egg. It looks like someone stuck a maxi pad on the inside of the shell.
So what's it actually supposed to look like?
I hope you try again with the Icelandics... this is the second time they've come up clear, right? Any way they can get to you with that egg train and bypass the PO?
Goochgirl, it sounds like you're keeping very busy! I hope everything comes out just perfect
Chances are good once your egg hatches, your chick will be much cuter than our fuzzy butts! ... and it won't feather out , get awkward and sqwacky and grumbly in just 6 weeks
In other news, been a busy couple of days. I started two new classes. Four total left until my master's is done. One of those four is an elective because I'm short on credits, so it'll actually be pretty interesting. But I get to do that one last. Broke the winter lock-in yesterday and went shopping ALL day. Yeah, so I bought Ramen noodles at
Walmart, chicken scratch at
TSC, and a bucket at Home Depot, but I wasn't stuck in the house staring at the snow, and it was awesome
And for those who were talking earlier about flashlights for candling.. we got some sort of flashlight on sale at Home Depot (because I keep stealing my husband's really expensive one, and I tend to lose it), it's a funky looking little thing, Ryobi brand. It was about $35 for the flashlight, rechargeable battery, and charger.. charger and battery were separate, we had to go back to get them. Wow. I think I blinded a future chick when I candled.. he started kicking up a storm and rolling around in there. And I tried in on a nice, dark marans egg, can see straight through. Worth looking into if you're looking for something!
I went ahead and locked down this morning. I keep seeing different info on the seramas, ranging from they hatch on day 19 to they hatch on day 21... and the one lady I got eggs from sent me a sheet on them that said to lock down on day 16. So today's day 17, I'm locking down just in case. I don't want to mess this up.
If nothing hatches this time, I'm going to have to find someone close enough to drive to and get chicks from.
