Chinese painted/button quail

You may need to make some modifications for ventilation (removing the heat lamp and covering the hole with mesh, things like that) although I can't see what's going on round the back! Also you will likely need to modify the ceiling, as it were, for boinking.
They are very sweet and funny to watch, but regardless of how small they are they really stink!! Whatever you house them in think about how you will clean them out.

They sure do!

I know I've read people say they are less likely to do it when they have housing with less height, and if it's solid so they can see they don't have anywhere to go, but I wouldn't risk itmyself, especially when space is limited and you need to get in there to clean it/replace food and water/catch them for wherever reason. Even the tamest birds ever that don't mind or appreciate your presence can still be taken by surprise!
Eta: or a persistent mate!

Do two tiny buttons really smell?? What is the best thing to have on the top to stop them from hurting themselves if they boink?

Yes, I can see that would be a good 'cushion' for them. Thanks so much!! :) Does a pair smell if they're cleaned out regularly Hybridchucks
