Chinese Shar-Pei..Anyone have any experience with them?

I have a German Shepard, Chinese Shar-Pei mix. She is the absolute sweetest dog. She has never bitten anybody and is so loving. She learns everything very quickly and is very motherly. I have two nephews about a year old and Ginger, my dog, is always trying to lick them and lay next to them. Unfortunately, Chinese Shar-Pei's do not live very long. 8-10 years as I just found out. My dog is 8 and has terminal cancer. Something to think about when choosing a dog!

Patients my friend.....have you looked on http://www.petfinder.com/index.html or http://www.petfinder.com/index.html or http://www.puppyfind.com/ this is where I found my saint.

I could not imagine loosing my saint. I am so sorry.

Yes I agree a bad combo on that dog but he looked more shar pei then chow. Some might be able to be raised right but I don't want to take any chances with little dogs and kids around here.....chickens probably too.

I still have both my boys too....that happened on 03/01/08.

They have short course hair. I have very few allergies, but they make me REALLY itchy and I get little red bumps all over my arms (usually the part of me the dog touches.) I have met a few other techs that have reactions to them too. I have seen a few come into vets I have worked at, Not a friendly one yet.

I don't know how much of my dog's personality is German Shepard and how much is Chinese Shar Pei but she has never had a problem with new people. She is protective of my family, but not aggressive at all. She barks but as soon as she see's that we like someone, she calms down and immediately accepts them. I just thought I should say something about that because of everyone else's comments about personality. Good luck finding a dog!

One thing not to be forgotten is that they were initially bred to be temple guard dogs. (I think, correct me if I am incorrect.)

It really depends on the person and life style the dog will have. We had a border collie that was absolutely horrible. Always biting and jumping over our fence chasing people down the street. We have a big family so the focus was not always on the dog. We gave him to a very small family who was able to spend more time with the dog and on training and he is not as bad anymore. Our current dog loves our busy life and we are able to incorporate her into a lot of things we do. She is also very easy to train. I have had horrific experiences with neighbors Pit Bulls and would never think of getting one but other people swear they are the sweetest dogs. Personal experience has a lot to do with choosing a dog.
