What kind of dog do you have!?

My dairy-farming sister has a mixed herd of Holsteins, Guernseys and a handful of Jerseys. The kids have been showing them in 4H for decades, and they always choose the Guernseys. The Holsteins are okay. They're not particularly docile, but they aren't nasty, either. They do the job they're supposed to do - produce a great deal of milk, but they are rather single-minded and not the brightest crayons in the box. If I had to equate them to a dog, it'd probably be a beagle - friendly, attentive until they're distracted, then really hard to get back on track. The Jerseys are the chihuahuas of the bovine world ... little, cute, loving when they want to be (or want something,) but they'll turn on you in an instant ... and they're smart enough to be sneaky about it. Those sweet faces hide a volatile mean streak!
Guernseys, especially if they're handled when young, are docile, even-tempered and friendly. They'll follow on or off-lead, come when called by name and have been known to play ball with my nephews and Tag with DD. When you see a kid napping on their cow at our Fair, it's generally either on a beef steer (those boys take a steam-shovel to move, once they're settled) or a Guernsey!
