My dairy-farming sister has a mixed herd of Holsteins, Guernseys and a handful of Jerseys. The kids have been showing them in 4H for decades, and they always choose the Guernseys. The Holsteins are okay. They're not particularly docile, but they aren't nasty, either. They do the job they're supposed to do - produce a great deal of milk, but they are rather single-minded and not the brightest crayons in the box. If I had to equate them to a dog, it'd probably be a beagle - friendly, attentive until they're distracted, then really hard to get back on track. The Jerseys are the chihuahuas of the bovine world ... little, cute, loving when they want to be (or want something,) but they'll turn on you in an instant ... and they're smart enough to be sneaky about it. Those sweet faces hide a volatile mean streak!
Guernseys, especially if they're handled when young, are docile, even-tempered and friendly. They'll follow on or off-lead, come when called by name and have been known to play ball with my nephews and Tag with DD. When you see a kid napping on their cow at our Fair, it's generally either on a beef steer (those boys take a steam-shovel to move, once they're settled) or a Guernsey!
Awwwwwwwww

I have three now, all rescues. From smallest to largest, half beagle, half chihuahua. Yeah, she has an attitude along with a great nose. She's ten.

Rosie, the fox terrier. She's a special case. We've had her for ten years and she's still afraid of me unless I'm sitting. She was part of a prison program where inmates tried to train dogs for part of their rehabilitation. She does not like men in general. I think I must look like her prisoner and he was obviously a bad person and probably mistreated her.

Then there's the new puppy, Ellie. She was sent from a shelter in Mississippi to one in Missouri at 8 weeks. I got her in late August at 14 weeks. She's now 18 weeks. She is supposed to be a Cur mix. No idea if that's Black Mouth Cur or Mountain Cur. No idea how much Cur or what she may be mixed with. The shelter guy explained that they list any dog they cannot prove to be a pure breed is labeled a mix.
She appears to have a fairly good nose and follows it. Hopefully she will take to chasing squirrels like the other two.

I've aged out of Airedales. My last one was 100 pounds of high drive hunter. I'm 71 now and no way could handle another one like Gabe.
