Jody, Those are gorgeous! the lacing is to die for!! go for it! Im all of us will follow and cheer you on the whole way!!! yahhhhh oooh imagine chocolate laced orpingtons-sounds like Easter candy!!!

Ohhh dont misunderstand me, Im just a stickler for using correct genetic terms for a color, comes from my obsession for horse colors LOL there are Pearl horses that look Palomino, but they arnt

I think DUN is georgous but less anyone get confused that it isnt the same color seen int he UK chocolate birds jsut yet! That color eludes us at this time and just frustrates the dickens outta me

I agree that your new project appears to be on the right track but are they DUNS? Is that what was used to create the color? Dun breeds like Blue I have been told , they dont breed true? Someday there will be true chocolate colored birds and Id hate for the confusion to be set in place between the two colors , jsut like in the OEGBs they call DUN chocolate and its confusing! lol The classroom poultry site has been very helpful with colors for me and helping me try to understand the ones that intrest me... I have to say thou your DUNs DOOOO look fab ...keep up the great work!

The phenotype called chocolate can be made by choc/choc or I^d/i+ (dun). I'm fully aware of how the genes work. So are you saying you think they are dun or is it possible we knicked the choc gene? Do you breed dun in OEGBs? If so, can you share pics.

Sonew - you behave yourself! Your pockets are already full come chickenstock time.

Im just not a fan of using phenotype when referring to a color, I much preferr the actual genotype, just saves confusion down the line dont you think? WHat if true chocolate shows up and then what? As far as Ive been told is that the only breed of chicken in the USA that carrys the chocolate gene is the serama,(besides a few orps that were culled years ago) it would take a long road to use a serama LOL little things aint they? They are sooooo darn cute though! I suppose its very well possible that chocolate orps will show up again someday, infact one lady that had it pop up and spoke of it had her flock dissapear! What a heart breaker!

I have no idea what color your new guys are but Im sure with some test breeding you'll have it figured out in no time weather its DUN or the elusive chocolate ! KUDOS! and congrats, looks like another great flock in the making!

I understand what you're saying. I see the same confusion with the name porcelain. That's why it's so important to know what you're working with and to clearly define it. Dr. Carefoot was fortunate enough to discover the gene. Like all new genes as they came about, they were discovered through particular breedings and identified through selection and testing. I don't see any reason why genes could not be uncovered in the US as they are elsewhere. Thanks for sharing this interest with us.

From the pictures, to me it doesn't look like dun or chocolate. It kinda reminds me of the color Red Dun in quarter horses. I have never seen any such color in chickens though. Might be a first.
