Chocolate eggs

Duramaxgirl:

Both of my girls came from feed stores...so they are hatchery girls.

This is Clara my Welsummer. ( The feed store gets their chicks from a hatchery in New Mexico.)I get an egg every other day from her. She is 14months old.

This is Phoebe my Cuckoo Marans. ( Not sure which hatchery Phoebe came from ) She lays just about every day. She is 8 months old.

Your post reminds me of something... I was at the grocery store recently when I heard a little boy exclaim to his his mom "Look, mama, chocolate eggs!!!"

First of all, those are beautiful eggs! Second of all, I have a "Cuckoo Maran" and I put that in quotations because we got her from a hatchery. Her eggs look exactly like the eggs in your basket; a lovely rich brown with speckles. Her eggs are HUGE, and I love the speckled quality, but they aren't the dark, smooth looking egg like the one in the other picture. Mabelline is her name; and we save her eggs for fried eggs, because the yolks are so big.

If you decide marans are your choice, post on the marans thread with your request. ANd maybe someone can sell you hatching eggs, or send chicks.

Eggs are often on the auctions here on BYC.

Thank you. My sister-in-law got 2 "Cuckoo Marans" when I got my 2, Phoebe and Lucy ( RIP 8/8/11- found her dead in her coop that morning) Phoebe lays darker eggs than her other two "sisters". Funny thing is that Phoebe is the only one out of the 4 that has that odd feather coloring and yellow legs. Looks like she is half Barred Rock and half Cuckoo Marans. I am very lucky to have her.

Mabelline, the one we have left, also has yellow legs, but her feathers definitely look like the Cuckoo Marans. The other two we had (one died in August from the heat we think) and the other was taken last week by a hawk, had the greyish/pink legs and the same feathers.
